Cold weather problem with 2000 Mercury Mountaineer?

This ONLY happens in cold weather - ~32 degrees F or below

When I start the Mountaineer, the front lights dim and the Idle goes almost to zero. When I step on the gas pedal, lights go full power and idle goes up - SOMETIMES it will "catch" and idle above 1000 RPM but other times the lights dim again and idle goes right back down to almost zero.

It usually does not stall.

Once I get out of the garage, I can drive it but have to constantly keep on the gas. After a while, it is back to normal again.

I had my mechanic "de-carb" the EGR valve last winter but had the same problem until the weather warmed up.

Any suggestions???

might be battery or alternator, take to autozone and they will test the battery and the starting charging system for free..

HI
sounds like the tpi (throttle position indicator) is bad or the choke is not working on it .. I have a tendency to think choke as after the motor warms up its ok
good luck
