Cold Water Fish- Interesting fish?

I kept goldfish when I was a student, and although I like plain old goldfish, lets face it, the tropical fish are much nicer to look at! Well, I'm thinking about getting a couple of fish for a cold water tank, and I was wondering if their are any interesting fish that can survive in cold water? Also, a breed that tends to be healthy.
