cold sores, oral sex, and genital herpes?

I have cold sores and recently have just performed oral sex on my man. With a bit of further research on herpes the next day, I have just realized, to my horror, that he can get herpes also-- the genital kind.
This only happened last night. Can he prevent getting it?
