Cold Mountain - a very cold film

I couldnt be the only one who wanted to fall asleep half-through this movie:rolleyes: . Just a total bore-fest. Sure it aint much of a bad movie, infact it aint bad at all. However it just all seems like we have "been there, done that", you know. Basically there is nothing in here that we havent seen in other civil war movies before.

Infact these type of movies (especially those with Nichole Kidman in them) just seems like if they were made just for the Oscars and nobody else, this is a typical "rave for today, forget tomorrow" Oscar loving film. And to tell you the truth i hate these "made for oscars" type shit because they only seem to satisfy those who love art house movies and those who for some strange reason hates blockbusters, even if they are good?:confused:

This and the last sama-something (oh i forgot it already :rolleyes: ) are the movies that the critics at the big awarRAB will clap their hanRAB too but the masses will shit on.

No wonder Lord of the rings:rotk seems likely to pick up best picture (not like it doesnt deserve it in my eyes) because the rest of the films to be nominated are SHIT!:rolleyes:
 
Mmm you know what maybe i'll take you up on that lol.

However i think the film might leave a cold scar on anyone who wants to read the book im afraid:(
 
COld Mountain is a masterpiece!
yes it was gory and more a feel-bad film rather than a feel-good one, but yuo must be very young or of very poor taste not to recognise even some beauty in it.
I thought it was amazing - surely people are more likely to sleep in LOTR with poor structure and no character development?
 
I went with my mother-in-law (60's) to see this and she loved it - I personally (40's) was not that impressed at all - to have an effect at all you need to become emotionally involved with the characters and to be frank I was more emotionally involved in Finding Nemo than I was was with any of the characters in this film - in fact the conclusion to the love story/journey was a definate "thank god for that the film will be over soon" rather than any other feelings - I will say it is beautifully shot and well acted but it left me feeling cold
 
Sorry but in ten years time this movie will be forgotten!

I hate these film like Cold Mountain because they only seem to be made for the Oscars:rolleyes:

Anyways i thought the film was cack and it will stay cack.............may the film burn in the hells of Mordor:D :p
 
The oscars are there for that purpose - to make the makers strive to make a good film.

It's better than being made just for the profit like LOTR.
 
LOTR was made at a time when there was no hype for the films expect the news that it was being filmed back to back!

Peter Jackson and co had to beg, litterally for the films to be financed! Miramax were going to make them but then quit, then New Line came in and took a risk!

This was all well before Harry Potter movies and etc............1996-2002! Thats how long it took to make these films....including pre-production. I doubt any studio would spend that much time on a movie for a quick buck:rolleyes: ! Especially when they didnt know if the films were going to be successful and continue that success through 3 films.
 
I get the feeling lala will agree that Spielberg's movies are usually good, then he goes an blows it with about half an hour left....

Most, if not all of his films are like this!
 
I sat through the whols film, and whilst it didn't make me want to fall asleep, I did sit there hoping that either:

- they would get together and live happily ever after, or
- one of the woyld be killed so that we could get home.

It was a gory, long winded film with an abrubpt and unsatisfying ending. Wouldn't watch it again. Infact when it's on TV at Christmas, I shall make a point of watching "Only Fools and Horses" on the other side.
 
Mr Spielberg is a bit of a what i would call a "yo-yo" director!

He can make some really excellent movies (saving private ryan etc, though that movie is a bit over-rated its still good). Then he can really make some mind-bogaling crap shit like JP2, Hook etc.......i'm sure theres plenty more.

But directors like Spielberg and Lucas are, how can i say it, too "hollywood" for me, if that makes any sense to you?

They just dont take enough risks nowadays to really pull a punch so to speak, they just stick to the "film school" technic too much for my liking.........They are always trying to please the general public and thats a bit off putting.

But Cold Mountain is like, been there, seen that now can we go home:rolleyes: . I mean if you are trying to say LOTR is a money spinning monster then just take a look at the studio behinf CM! Miramax are total manipulaters when it comes down to releasing a "oscar friendly" movie. I mean for the past 10 years or so at every Oscar award there has been a Miramax movie in the best film section. And most of those movies are typical Oscar fodar like civil war movies, long epic period dramas etc. I mean unlike any other studio Miramax just seems to make some of their movies just to please the judges. But thank god now its the first time ever in a long while that a miramax movie isnt in the best picture or best director section, and rightly so.

So if you are talking about movies with a tactic (which every single movie has, even art house films) then dont just leave out Cold Mountain because its just as much of a blooRABucker then any other movie.

And am i the only one who thinks Jude Law being nominated for CM is an offence, he wasnt even that good and that fake american accent was totally rubbish! :rolleyes:
 
But if Miramax are the shrewd company you are making them out to be, wouldn't they be releasing films to make them big bucks rather than ones to please judging panels?
If "movies" didn't have tactics there would be no real point to them - I would take tactics to mean messages, reasons etc.
There is no doubt that LOTR will sweep the boarRAB but I don't necessarily think it will be for the right reasons.

I also disagree about Jude Law - he deserves a nomination, to win it...I'm not too sure though.
Nicole Kidman, whilst I expected her to be in, I don't think she deserves an oscar for her part.
Renee I hope will win one though.
 
Do you not realise what
"nominated for 4 Golden Globes, and 7 Academy AwarRAB" can do to a film?!?!

They can see turnover multiple so many times you couldn't imagine the difference!
