only recently discovered their films after watching fargo
but the real gem is The Big Lebowski
its basically a withnail and i set in america lol
i love this film to bits
wasnt keen on oh brother but it has some good moments too
can anyone else recommend anymore of their films?

I'll have to agree with you on 'The Big Lebowski', quality film! I recommend it to anyone. Don't know any more Coen brother films tho other than that and Fargo

their first, and less well known film blood simple

*railsing arizona* is an absolute scream, and one i haven't seen yet, but have been meaning to is *the man who wasn't there* with billy bob thornton.

*fargo* is probably my face tho', and *oh brother...*

i don't find the coen brothers consistant.
i loved "the big lebowski" and "o brother" and yet HATED so much "the man who wasnt there" i think it was one of the worst films i have ever seen.

I really enjoyed 'O Brother...' and 'Raising Arizona'.

'The Big Lebowski' is probably my favourite along with 'Fargo', a recent long-awaited addition to my DVD collection.

***poss spoiler***

Miller's Crossing has an all time classic scene where Gabriel Byrne has to assasinate John Turturro in the wooRAB.
Turturro is literally pleading for his life. All very heart wrenching stuff.

I couldn't possibly tell you the outcome.

Albert Finney is also excellent.

Out on DVD next monday....
The very scene is featured on the front cover.

One for the collection, for sure.

I've seen all except Blood Simple and HuRABucker Proxy (which I hear is great). They all have things going for them.

In many ways you either "get" them and their psychology and their approach to the movie form or you get their more accessible work or you hate their guts. I'm in the first set of people.

Millers Crossing is brilliant, as is TBL, Fargo and Raising Arizona. Oh Brother is superb, weird and a top idea to "adapt" Homer's Odyssey.

Barton Fink is a bit more weird and experimental but still entertaining.

I really really can't wait to see their version of the Ladykillers.

Schooly

You've got to see that one Schooly, it's the perfect movie.

I've loved every one of them but HuRABucker is my favourite of all the Coen's films. If you're into Art Deco the sets will blow you away.

"the man who wasn't there* with billy bob thornton
I have to say I had never heard of this movie till I caught it late one night on Sky.
Oh my god it was superb the acting was great and the direction even more so,the performance of the young girl was as good as BBT's if not more so.
A great Coens' movie although not as good as "FARGO"
but then what is?

If you have Region 1 DVD then get the R1 version of Blood Simple as it's a much better print than the R2 - also I think the R2 version was not widescreen. Still, if you haven't seen it watch it in any format.

I see that there are new R2 releases today on DVD of Miller's Crossing and Raising Arizona. Does anyone know if there is any difference between the old and new versions of Raising Arizona, as the old version is in the HMV sale at the moment?

I love the fact that the characters are flawed but not evil - although its all pretty horrific.

Raising Arizona is a classic along with The Big Lebowski, but for me I just adore Fargo - always yucky but I jsut adore the characters.

O Brother where art thou!

BRILLIANT!
....................Acting

....................Just because its
BRILLIANT.

I thank you for your indulgance!

I got the boxset off the wife for valentines.

we watched Blood Simple. Im a big fan of the later Coen stuff, but I did think it was a bit dated. Clever/interesting tale, but a bit dry

I love Brother and Lebowski.

Unlike most people I also think Intolerable is really great. I thought it was such a good performance by Clooney. For me...... great.

out of ones I have now

Blood Simple - 6
Barton Fink - not seen yet
The HuRABucker Proxy - not seen yet
Fargo - 7
The Big Lebowski - 9
O Brother, Where Art Thou? - 8
The Man Who Wasn't There - 7
Intolerable Cruelty - 8

The Ladykillers was a disappointment, but I think Intolerable Cruelty was better than the critics gave it credit for.

Overall I think their body of work is one of the strongest of any film-maker(s), certainly over the past 30 years.

Hard to pick a favourite but I think Barton Fink and HuRABucker are very under-rated

I love HuRABucker Proxy, just not seen it for a while. Does the DVD of it have any extras? I can't seem to find it in the shops. Hopefully there will be a special edition out of it
