Cobalt

Palm has traditionally not provided upgrades for the OS either for free or otherwise. And since now, Palm Source is the developer of the software versus the hadware - I doubt that Cobalt will be available for upgrade to the T3.

There are some interesting comments here at the Palm Source site that discusses the differences.

I would think that an upgrade to 5.4 would be a "maybe" instead of to Cobalt.

But this is one of those threads that's going to generate several opinions and wishes.

It would be nice for Palm Source to provide upgrades but there isn't any prior historical proof that they will.

They did do some minor updates in the past but these were from 3.0 to 3.5 upgrades. I've never seen them opt for others.

EDIT: Their will be a new HotSync Exchange feature that will include "drag and drop" install for JPEG and Word files according to the blurp.....so perhaps a device is just around the corner since Dataviz just updated to version 7.

Cobalt also includes USB support that appears to be different then Garnet's so I'm wondering if we won't see a new hardware platform that's not been conceived yet.

I remember being able to go from 4.0 (M505) to the 4.1 (M515) but you're right in that -- hell -- no one else is giving any upgrades for free - why should PalmOne? I think it would be in their best interests personally; you're also more than likely dead on with the "5.4" thing but I think I'll pass.

Sadly - I'll probably be passing period - I've got my T3 ROM so tweaked now with JackSprat/Flash that I'd have to start all over with an OS6 upgrade reflash and then perhaps have a glitch with the Sprat thing -- it would be a "net loss." Right now all is fine with the world. More than likely I'll get another T3 (spare) when the prices drop and just stick with OS5 (which is the reason I upgraded from the 505 and did without the hacks - I had a feeling OS6/cobalt would be a nightmare and even MORE restrictive in software choices. I am looking forward WITH GREAT EAGERNESS to hearing the reports on this forum, however -- and if enough software works I WOULD purchase OS6 whether or not it had Landscape (overrated; I barely use the longer T3 screen).

Apparently if the rumors are correct (HA HA HA HA!!!) one of the only apps we'll all have in Cobalt is Docs2Go!! (Oh, and I guess ISCAMbic - for another $29 -- beta -- YOU UNDERSTAND).
