may i first start by saying hi, i have just joined the forum. i have owned a 1200 bandit for 4 years now and it has been a dream, until now, at high revs in 3rd, 4th and 5th, gearing up an down the clutch slips then takes grip. i know the that plates 5 and 6 inbetween the friction plates are thicker and was advised that putting a thicker plate in position 2 would solve the problem, this made it better but it is still not right, i have also replaced the friction plates which made no difference, any help woiuld be appreciated as i have a track day in 1 week and want the bike in top performance for then, thanks.:)

Hello.

Model year?
Mileage?
Oil type?
Oil age?
Power mods?

Usually stronger springs are the solution. It may just be that your bike's clutch is due for overhaul. Start by answering these basic questions.

first may i start by saying hi to one and all as i have just joined the forum. i have owned a 1200 bandit for 4 years and it has been a dream, until now.the clutch slips at hi revs in 3rd, 4th, and 5th when gearing up and down.i know that plates 5 and 6 inbetween the friction plates are thicker and was told that by replacing plate 2 with a thicker one would solve the problem, it didnt, i have put new friction plates in but this didnt fix the fault, i have replaced the oil and this didnt work, any ideas or solutions would be appriciated, thanks.

hi buddy, the year is a 1999 model, it has done 14000 miles, it has new 10/40 mineral oil in it,no power mods new friction plates in it, the only spring in it are in the clutch basket at the back and not on the front for tention like the bandit 600

Sounds to me like the clutch is worn out or glazed, or the springs are worn out, as this is perfectly natural behavior for a clutch at the end of its life. I don't know how many miles you have on the current clutch, but 4 years is about right to replace the OEM one.

If you replaced all the clutch plates, check the metal plates for warping and replace if needed, and replace the clutch springs with heavy duty aftermarket ones.

The only other possibility is that you put in synthetic oil intended for a car, rather than motorcycle specific synthetic oil, and the friction modifiers in the car oil have made the clutch plates too slippery. If this is the case, you might want to replace the clutch anyways, but you can try draining out all the oil, filling the crankcase with Marvel Mystey Oil, letting it sit overnight, then drain and refill with the correct oil.

the clutch friction plates have been replaced and there are no tention springs on the 1200, the 600 has them but not the 1200.the only springs are the ones in the back of the clutch basket. i am using 10/40 mineral oil.

thanks for that, it is the diaphram springs that i need to upgrade then, im in the uk so if have to find a dealer who sells them, your a top man, thanks

hi, just an update, i replaced the diaphram springs with uprated ones and this solved the problem, i went on a track day and the bike was om top form with no clutch slip and plenty of power, thanks for your replys
