I just purchased a Male Betta fish today from a pet store. But I don't really know much about them. I got him a small 1.66 gallon aquarium kit yesterday, which I set up and let run for the day until I got my fish. He seemed fine when I put him in (he kept staring at me) and then I tried to feed him pellets. He ate one and then the others he would eat and spit them out and they'd just float to the gravel. Why does he do this? I don't want to keep trying cause I'm afraid I'll overfeed him, but I don't want him to starve either.

Then, I noticed a lot of his color is gone (he's supposed to be blue).

Also, I just got home and he was just chilling out on the bottom, where the gravel is. He's swimming around now, but is my Betta alright? I don't know what to do.
My friend has had a betta for two years and it lived in a regular fish bowl with a plant. And was happy. There is a filter in the tank, but no heater. The water is room temperature. I just don't know how to feed him.. if he keeps spitting it out.

alot of ppl buy a kit like that and any fish don't do great in them but on the other note make sure you clean up what he dont eat the could make the what dirty which is causing your problem.. try to upgrade to a 5 gallon tank with a filter most of those 1g set ups are poorly made which kills alot of fish. also make sure his water is between 72-78 i find they live at there best at that temp

Your fish is fine. All fish taste something then spit it out. The loss of color could be because of a change in diet. and him just chilling out at the bottom of the tank isn't a big deal aether. hes probity just bored.

i would recomend taking him out into a seperate container and putting some water conditioner that removes chlorine, amonia, etc. what kind of pellets are they? sometimes they could be picky, so try betta pellets or they also like freeze dried blood worms. and about his color, that definately is a sign there is something wrong, you shoud DEFINATELY do the water conditioner and filter it for 3-6 days.
hope this helps, and good luck caring for your fishy:)
and if the worst happens, if you get a new one, make sure you do the water conditioner for 3-6 days before you get your new pet.
GOOD LUCK!!

buy either live food or freeze dried food like black worms or mosquito larvae. my betta didnt accept flakes or pellets for a while. after he learns that your hand means food then give him one live and one pellet. and he can live in a tank that size but its not the nicest thing so buy a bigger tank (like a five gallon with filter) or bigger if you get the chance.
