Fat Controller - you might like to check out the internet viral marketing before you see the film - it's quite fun - a brief synopsis & links below:
The first appearance of Cloverfield was in an untitled trailer before the
Transformers film at the cinema, which showed a group of partygoers witnessing some explosions in New York City. The trailer just ended with the date 1-18-08.
The unknown film became known as "1-18-08".
Somehow (probably through leaks) it was discovered that "Cloverfield" was the working title of the film, but it was stated that it wouldn't be the final title. It was also reported to have the working title "Cheese".
I think the trailer was also shown with
Beowulf.

This isn't the original trailer, it's a slightly later one. The original didn't have the monster roars on it.
A website with the 1-18-08 address appeared:
http://www.1-18-08.com/
It's a collection of photos. You can move them about using your mouse. If you make a quick circular motion with your cursor you can flip a picture over to look at the back. You have to bring the photo to the front of the pile first by just shuffling them around. The photo of the chef has a recipe on the back (written in Japanese). The one of the 3 people has a message on the back, and also the one of the guy being given a drink.
I noticed that there's a new photo on there now of a missing person. Also there's a roaring sound if you leave the page open long enough - they're relatively new things, added after the film had been released.
A translation of the recipe is:
An internet search of
Kaitei no mitsu brings up "Seabed's Nectar", and its use in a drink called
Slusho.
There's a website for Slusho:
http://slusho.jp/
It looks like a real company. It's got contact details, job offers, etc, and an email address. I don't know what happens if you send an email, but you probably get an automated answer.
It's a fictitious drink made by a ficticious company called
Tagruato.
The Slusho drink was (reputedly) first mentioned in the second episode of J.J. Abrams' television series
Alias.
(There was a YouTube video of this clip but "This video has been removed due to terms of use violation")
Tagruato has a website:
http://www.tagruato.jp/
with a page on its subsidiary company
Slusho:

An environmentalist movement known as
T.I.D.O.Wave then appeared on the internet, attacking Tagruato.

It's an environmental campaign by a ficticious environmentalist group called
