Cloverfield

It's not official yet for Cloverfield 2, just in small ideas stages apparently.

Finally finished the movie last night, it's was decent and fun but very overrated.

We spotted this in Sainsburys earlier, and considered buying it, but neither of us had heard of it; the cover made it look as though it was a take off of Day After Tomorrow, although I could be barking up the wrong tree there...

Has anyone seen it, and is it any good?

I think Abrams has ditched the idea of a Cloverfield sequel because it was either going to be the same thing over again i.e. a handycam shot film, or a bigger, more hollywood version, neither of which would be original ideas. I believe he's looking at doing another 'different style' film with an original story after he's got his new TV series up and running...

... just checked up on DH where i get most of my news from and found this quote from last month's comicon:

"J.J. Abrams said that "There's something we're playing with now that may or may not happen. There's an idea we have that plays with... it's not a literal sequel" when asked about a "Cloverfield" sequel during a panel at Comic-Con this year."

I think I read that the sequel would be from someone else's point of view.
I loved it, think I'll have a sick bucket with me next time though. It's so easy to get drawn in.. think I see the appeal of Lost if it's like that!

Didnt think i would but I enjoyed it.

Nothing like day after. Think more along the lines of
blair witch meets godzilla

all done through a cam, but big monster in N.Y
not that you get to see too much of it for most of the film.

Think rent before buy unless it's really cheap. Seems to be a love or hate it kind of movie.

I really liked it, although I don't think I could be bothered to watch it more than once, so I'd also suggest a rental, then buy if you think it's worth it.

I personally loved it, a great film and i've watched it many times! The best time being in the cinema to be fair... But i loved it. I can see how its not many peoples kind of film but it thought it was excellently done!

Its done through a camera... someone is recording the whole thing on there camera, but its nothing like Blair Witch, its not shoddy camera work, i thought it was really effective and didn't look cheap. The effects were amazing and there are some good  moments in there!

I definately recommend it to buy, if you do get it let us know what you think :)

Fat Controller - you might like to check out the internet viral marketing before you see the film - it's quite fun - a brief synopsis & links below:

The first appearance of Cloverfield was in an untitled trailer before the Transformers film at the cinema, which showed a group of partygoers witnessing some explosions in New York City. The trailer just ended with the date 1-18-08.
The unknown film became known as "1-18-08".
Somehow (probably through leaks) it was discovered that "Cloverfield" was the working title of the film, but it was stated that it wouldn't be the final title. It was also reported to have the working title "Cheese".
I think the trailer was also shown with Beowulf.

Trailer on YouTube here:

This isn't the original trailer, it's a slightly later one. The original didn't have the monster roars on it.

A website with the 1-18-08 address appeared:

http://www.1-18-08.com/

It's a collection of photos. You can move them about using your mouse. If you make a quick circular motion with your cursor you can flip a picture over to look at the back. You have to bring the photo to the front of the pile first by just shuffling them around. The photo of the chef has a recipe on the back (written in Japanese). The one of the 3 people has a message on the back, and also the one of the guy being given a drink.
I noticed that there's a new photo on there now of a missing person. Also there's a roaring sound if you leave the page open long enough - they're relatively new things, added after the film had been released.

A translation of the recipe is:

An internet search of Kaitei no mitsu brings up "Seabed's Nectar", and its use in a drink called Slusho.

There's a website for Slusho:

http://slusho.jp/

It looks like a real company. It's got contact details, job offers, etc, and an email address. I don't know what happens if you send an email, but you probably get an automated answer.

It's a fictitious drink made by a ficticious company called Tagruato.

The Slusho drink was (reputedly) first mentioned in the second episode of J.J. Abrams' television series Alias.
(There was a YouTube video of this clip but "This video has been removed due to terms of use violation")

Tagruato has a website:

http://www.tagruato.jp/

with a page on its subsidiary company Slusho:

http://www.tagruato.jp/slusho_subsidiaries.php

An environmentalist movement known as T.I.D.O.Wave then appeared on the internet, attacking Tagruato.

It's an environmental campaign by a ficticious environmentalist group called Les Guerriers de M

Brilliant film - still my favourite of the year... so far!
It does lose a little bit of impact on the small screen but not enough to spoil it.

Also if you watch the extras on the DVD to see how they created some of the scenes, it's just incredible the work they went to!

That is all very clever (what's with the strange looking carcass/blood in the ocean....?)

I left the website open and opened other windows - that roar scared the **** out of me!

PS - I enjoyed Cloverfield but would rent rather than buy.

I was actually dissappointed with the DVD becuase it missed out the whole viral content. I was hoping for a load of special features content with the news feeRAB, pictures etc... and an explanation of how it all got put together and what it all meant. Sadly there's nothing on the DVD!

Loved it but watching at the cinema gave me serious motion sickness, I had to look away quite often and that doesn't happen to me anywhere else. Not sure if it would be as bad on a small screen though.

Have you been living under a rock for the past year???
Cloverfield was one of the biggest movies of the year!

Definately worth buying it on DVD! aslong as you can stomach "shakey-cam"

You can access a hidden menu on the scene selection part of the disc. Move the cursor to 13-16 on the bottom of the scene selection screen (the numbers turn red). Leave it like that for about a minute and Chap.17 appears. There are some bits and pieces of viral content here.

There is a nice steelbook 2 disc edition out, with lovely packaging(like the front of it has been crushed effect), can find it in places like HMV. It's gorgeous. Yet to watch it though lol.
