Closer

Im sorry for anyone who enjoyed this movie but I have to say I thought it was the biggest waste of time and money ever to come from any film studio. The film was devoid of any real message, the characters were boring and quite frankly like the rest of the movie - lifeless - and the fact that they actually displayed what the men were saying in the chatroom was just one step too far for me. Ok we hear stuff being spoken that's a bit close to the knuckle but I can't recall the last time I heard - let alone saw - dialogue so graphic. The timeline seemed to be on some sort of a bungy cord and quite frankly i think a lot of people only watched because they're favourite actor or actress was in it. If this is cinema at it's best - and oscar winning cinema at that - we're in serious danger of reverting to the old movies of the 30's, 40's 50's etc. The film's only redeeming feature was the use of the 'Blower's Daughter' by Damien Rice - other than that just a big fat waste of anyone's time. Get closer to something good.
 
I agree with the above poster.

I thoguht this movie was totally pretentious and found the dialogue so clunky.

I would guess it was probably much better as a play but it translated to film very badly, just didnt work at all.

I think the director thought he was being really clever, but it just felt cold and unreal.

I didnt feel one ounce of sympathy for any of the characters, they were all vile and selfish and deserved one another.

As for the acting don't start me - wooden!! All of them!
 
Wasn't too keen on this but wasn't reall paying attention properly was too tired when I first watched it, I only watched because I'm a Natalie fan, would have to watch it again to make proper comment, but apart from Nat and Clive's acting wasn't too impressed, Julia was just so meh for me and you're going what why would the Jude character dump Nat's character Alice for her or maybe that was just me???
 
I loved it. I thought it was a very clever portrayal of modern relationships - and the chat between the two male leaRAB in the online sex chat room is probably very realistic... oh and I really wanted to sleep with Clive by the end of it!!!
 
I just have to say that I saw this film on DVD last night. First time I have seen it and I really was very impressed. My partner on the other hand didn't think too much of it so perhaps it is more of a film for women.

I know it has had some very mixed reviews and the storyline is quite odd but it all seems to work somehow. The emotions were very raw and Clive Owen and Natalie Portman in particular were brilliant. I definitely agree with one of the posters in this thread that it really does have a feel of a Woody Allen film. I am still thinking about it today so it obviously worked on me!
 
agreed, I don't think it is the sort of film that you would want to watch all the time.

I do think it is a film that leaves you thinking about it though and also it isn't a thriller or one where millions and millions of pounRAB have been spent on special effects, and when you strip that away, it relies on good acting and attempting to get you to share in the emotion they are trying to portray.
