 Never too late!

Jude Law was very good in this. My favorite scene is probably the one where he's explaining to Alice what he does while they take a short bus trip. Oh, Larry was REALLY rude. Haha! He was such a caveman. I think he calls himself a caveman at some point. lol

I like parts of every couple. I think all four characters were in love with themselves, but I don't know, they could have loved each other in some way. What I'm positive about is that they were all, at one point, intensely infatuated with whoever they happened to be with at the moment.

During the scene in Larry's office, he told Dan that Anna does things to make sure she stays unhappy leading into the depressives conversation. I think Dan is the same way in the sense that he did jump at Anna too quickly. I think all of the characters were afraid to fully surrender to love, so they subconsciously sabotaged their relationships.

I just saw this for the first time today and like a lot of you I wasn't sure how I felt. My first instinct wasn't that I disliked it. I was just not expecting what I saw. I guess I'm saying I'm still absorbing everything. Like someone else said, a second viewing would be beneficial so I can get past the initial introduction and sink my teeth into the meat of the movie.

Just showing the ups and downs of relationships was probably the only way to present the stories and not just because it was over a 3-4 year period. If you think back on past relationships, what do you remember? Chances are you only remember the ups and downs. You don't tend to remember the inconsequential moments.

me too!!!..i guess the first film i ever saw him in was 'croupier'.....a very small independent film....in a theater about 5 years ago......and i've also seen him in another smaller film called 'i'll sleep when i'm dead'......earllier this year in a theater as well....i enjoyed both of these films....

i liked 'closer'.....my take on the the film is how honest does one really want to be in a relationship.....totally, part way, not at all....or should somethings be better left unsaid......it seemed that no matter which approach the characters in this film took, the results or consequences weren't that great......

i honestly didn't know that 'closer' was an adapted play.....thinking about it now it did seem kind of like a play as i was watching it.....but as i said in the beginning of this post i liked the film.....if i'm ever able to watch the stage version...i think i will.....i bet it would make great theater........

Loved the video Cindy!

I loved this movie. It was so twisted and nuts, and I was sitting at the edge of my seat the whole time with my eyes wide open. The performances were great considering that these roles were so crazy. It was very simple, and for that...it was pretty much amazing.

I FINALLY saw this movie. LMAO. 6 YEARS LATER. lololol.

I liked it. It was very slow in parts and weird, but interesting. I am not really a Jude Law fan, but I thought he did really great in the film, personally, I found him pretty likable. I do like Clive Owen, but I thought his character was pretty crude and rude. LOL. Love Julia Roberts. And I'm one of the few out there, but I just dont like Natalie Portman. I just fail to see whats so special about her? I mean, shes talented, but I dont know...

Of all the pairings I liked Anna/Dan the best. But I think people in this thread are right in saying that none of them really, truly, loved another. At least not fully.

I saw it for the first time last night. I wasn't quite sure whether I liked it or not. personally, I loved the dialog. I agree with whoever said that it was how people feel. not necessarily speak. Anyway, I watched it again this morning and I really love it. as you can probably tell from my sig. The only problem I did have with it was that it seemed that all the characters apparently forgot love for a good shag. I thought that Dan jumped at Anna a little to soon. You didn't really see what drew him to her. They just met and then he was throwing himself at her. Other then that, I loved it.

I thought everyone in the cast was fantastic. Natalie Portman was phenomanal.

Cindy, in that case, go vote for a Natalie board, then I'll def start up a Natalie/Jude thread! :D

Everyone go vote, in fact! Natalie Portman board! :star:

The original ending is that Alice dies, Larry starts dating a pretty nurse named Polly (you never see her), this is after Larry and Anna split up. The play ends at Postman's Park I believe, with Dan and Anna talking - Dan says that old girlfriend Ruth married a Spanish poet. That's also when you found out that Alice isn't her real name, etc.

The play is amazing, everyone should read it. :) I'd be interested to see this production on stage as well.

I just saw this movie tonight, and there are no words. Of course all of the people in the theater did not get the idea of the film. And complained and laughed at innapropriate times. But, I just sat there uncomfortable, watching a movie that was giving me shivers. I felt so moved when I left, and at the same time violated.

I felt like I shouldn't have seen what I did. The conversations between the couples were so personal, real, and raw that I felt like I shouldn't be listening. Like as if I were trespassing.

All of the actors were amazing throughout, and kept me involved until the final frame. I loved how the film was edited chronologically, it was perfect. All the other information left out was extraneous, and not necessary. What we saw were those crucial moments we needed to see.

This movie was pure extacy, and I will definetly go see it once more, and I hope the Academy recognizes Clive Owens and Natalie Portman, because they lit up the screen.

- Does anyone know the original ending in the play?

Oh! Yes! Yes! I wanted to see this despite Jude Law (or whoever that guy is who isn't Clive Owen). Thanks. :)

ETA - I changed the title of the thread because you all are discussing plot and character development. Don't forget to use the "spoiler" alert in thread titles when you're going to do that, or start a new spoiler thread, okay?

*Sweetie*, I didn't like his character either. But after the movie my boyfriend said, "Typical guy." I'm going to try to relate my line of thinking to discussion of Roswell... people talked about how the females were given powers that could easily manipulate others, on a psychological level, while the males were given forceable physical powers. I thought it was interesting that Larry used such psychological manipulation. And I just saw him as a kind of person who enjoyed what I could consider sexually deviant activities, so it made me wary of his intentions.

I'd really like to see it again, to re-connect the Jane/Alice bit. The first viewing now is more of a how-do-you-do, and seeing it again would make me understand things that seemed unimportant at the time.

 About the cursing.

Larry is an effective character because he can be so rough, then tender and other times SO scary! When he asks Anna if she thought he might hit her I thought he would seriously smack her after she said, "I've been hit before". Of course I was ready to totally hate him... But he replied, "Not by me" with such disgust that she would even think he'd be capable of hitting her. Clive was excellent!

Natalie Portman was just hands down perfect. When she asks Dan, "how do you do this to someone?" Uhh, so good!

I'm with you, summerbug.

I think Julia Roberts is one of the most overrated actresses in Hollywood and I can't stand really stand her.

That's exactly what I was saying. :)

Let me ask you guys a question. If you were Anna, who would you choose in the end?

This movie was fabulous. Everytime Clive Owen would curse I would shiver he just sounded so hot! Lol He was the best. I also really liked Natalie Portman. JR and JL were okay didn't like them as much though. My favorite scene definitely was in the strip club with Alice and Larry chattin. I've watched this movie like five times I also love that song.

She really surprised me in this film.

Granted, she proved she can act with "Erin Brockovich"... But this is an even deeper role in that it isn't "gimmicky" (no big hair, boobs) and she also wears no makeup in the film at all.

I also think that her character is actually more developed than Natalie Portman's in the long run. Natalie is a fine actress and deserves her Golden Globe (and probably Oscar) nomination...

But I honestly think Julia Roberts role is the harder one to portray of the two females and you will see why once you see it.
