Close-up images of Saturn’s rings show a number of dark, straight features called “spokes.” As these features orbit around Saturn, they tend to retain their shape like the rigid spokes on a rotating bicycle wheel. The spokes rotate at the same rate as Saturn’s magnetic field and are thought to be clouds of tiny, electrically charged particles that are kept in orbit by magnetic forces. Explain why the spokes could not maintain their shape if they were kept in orbit by gravitational forces alone.
