clipping = cables?

I picked up an HD sat this weekend (Bell Expressvu 6100) and have had mostly good experiences. The only problem that I've had is with sound. I'm using optical (its the only digital sound output on the unit) and running it into my Harmon Kardon. The probelm is when I change from HD channels to SD channels or visa versa (sp?). About half the time, there is a clipping sound before the picture comes in. I've never had clipping during the actual shows, DVD's, XBOX 360, or music (even at loud levels). The only time I get a clipping or hiccup is when I switch channels. Here is a break down of my system:

Harmon Kardon 146 rec
Polk RTi10 front
Polk LSiC center
Polk M30 rear
D-Box sub

This is my first time using optical cables and I hear they can be fickle. Is it possible that the cable is causing the problem? I've tried changing it to different optical input and I get the same result. I'm thinking it's either the optical cable or the sat reciever. Thoughts?
 
Yes, the HK put out some of the HD channels in true surround sound. Others are just the front two and the link says. I've now tried an upgraded cable and have the same problem. I'm going to get a new BEV receiver tonight and see if the problem continues. If it doesn't work, I'll try a new switch coming off the sat. Anyone else have this clipping noise? Some of the people I talked to today said this is a common problem.
 
I have the same issue with my 6100, but when I put the 9200 in that location, there was no problem at all.

Put the 6100 back 2 months later, never noticed it again.

I just put it down to it being Express Vu.....
 
I tried a second receiver and have the same problem. That leads me to believe that it's something between the sat and the receiver. I'm now going to try a new sw21 and new cable coming from the switch to the back of the receiver. Right now I'm sure if the cable I'm using is RG6 or not. Other than that, the only thing it could be is the Harmon, but I don't think that's it because it has no problem going from HD to HD or SD to SD. To me, it's only when the BEV has to switch from 91 to 82 that there is clipping, so it must be something that operates when that change is made. I'll let everyone know how it goes tomorrow night. Thoughts on my theories?
 
its just something in the feed...i get the same thing from time to time...it's like there is a clipping sound when audio changes from stereo to 5.1.
 
That's unbelievable. if it's something in the feed, why doesn't bell fix this? There is potential to harm my speakers because of this. Funny thing is that I know people that have BEV HD and don't have this problem. Anyone think that the switch and cable idea will work? I also spoke with someone from Bell on an unrelated topic and the mentioned that the REV should be updated. Not sure what that is, but would that have any effect?
 
Bev HD audio is DD 5.1
Some SD is DD 2.0 and
MOST SD is MUSICAM.

The mixture of formats causes your amp to loose sync while it figures out whether to be in Dolby or PCM mode.

This only happens in Digital (Toslink/Coax) SPDIF outputs and not on analog L+R MODES.

Different amps respond faster/better.

So your saying that my amp is the problem? I bought this amp thinking that is was high end and I wouldn't have any problems like this. Is it a problem with my amp or that model of amp?
 
i get a small clicking sound on my pioneer when the 9242 switches digital audio formats. certainly not loud enough for clipping. This can happen when i'm changing channels, but also when a broadcaster switches formats going to and from commercials or programs. some stations are much better at processing audio than others. simsubs just make it worse.
Bev has no control over broadcastors switching formats, they only pass through what they get. Some AV receivers are more forgiving than others.

And it has nothing to do with cables or sat switches.
 
I use a Pio 912K and never notice a thing on ANY of my A/V receivers, and I have ALL providers, 3 SAT + Digi Cable.
I also have used 2 other Pio's with NO problems.

They are connected via TOS-LINK to an 8 port Component switcher.

Sometimes high-end stuff can be extra finicky.

Looser/sloppy specs might not reveal the perverse mixture of signals.

While you might consider it a problem, I think it's just one of those compatibility issues we have to bear with a lot of the modern electronics out there.

Since I DON"T use a 92XX product, could THAT be the problem?
Ask around and see if any of the HD FTA units click with your model of amp.
 
Figured out the problem. Likes most have said, it was the amp. I took the 146 back to the store I got it from and upgraded to a 147 thinking that the 146 may have been faulty. Came home and hooked up the new one and the same this happened. Talk about frustrating! After this I had had just about enough of playing with this. I pulled out an old Pioneer 517K that I had sitting in the closet, hooked it up and everything was fine. The problem was with the inner workings of the Harmon! I took the 147 back and brought home a Pioneer 1017K. Everything is much better now. After fixing an auto shutdown last night (wires were touching in surround speakers) we are good to go. Thanks for the help everyone, your advise went a long way in helping my situation.
