Clint Eastwood

Got nearly all his films on dvd except those which,to my knowledge, arent available. Ones I'm missing are Away All Boats,Escapade In Japan,The First Traveling Saleslady,Lafayette Escadrille and The Witches. Not seen any of them in the tv schedules for ages,Away All Boats was on C4 about three years ago but I couldn't watch or record it as we had a power cut and had no electric for most of that day! Incidentally if anyone does know of any official dvd releases (any region) of the above please post or pm me. Thanks.

Speculation!

This attitude has caused more problems than enough over ions-people stating what they think and not the facts.
I am talking about the facts-Rowdy Yates never swore(as far as I can remember-I`m sure I will be corrected if wrong)
Clint Eastwood swears in all his later movies-it`s not clever and I`m unimpressed!

Clint bought the rights to the story in the 70s, and held onto them until the 90s when he felt he was of a suitable age to star in it. Amazing! And you're right, the film is a modern classic.

Of course it is speculation, I have never said anything to the contrary, but it is also based upon an educated guess in that Rowdy Yates, although a fictious character, is still a 30 something human male and it is in the nature of human beings to utter profanities. Rawhide as we know was a family show and therefore it is totally not expected that Rowdy would ever "cuss" on screen thus breaking the broadcasting code.

Clint is not trying to be clever or impress and he is most certainly not out to offend those of a little more sensitive nature, he is trying to portray as realistically as possible in order not to dretract from the film, a character as grizzled or jaded as a former soldier or policeman or boxing coach for example. Realism is the key in his later films. I apprecaite you find profanity offensive but I am just trying to illustrate that the level of profanity in his later films is justified by the fact that he wants to be realistic. Gran Torino as I explained earlier was based upon a racist (against the Chinese) veteran of the Korean War who hated everything about life except for his prized Ford Gran Torino car. How can this character study be successful if the character only said goldarn it or or flip instead of the profane alternatives? The lack of realism would spoil a story Clint wanted to tell.

Some would say swearing is merely a realistic part of human nature though.

Put it this way, many films where the screenplay has been dotted with expletives have been where he portrays a grizzled, no nonsense jaded cop (The Rookie) or a soldier or former soldier (Heartbreak Ridge and Gran Torino). It is not a stretch to imagine that the character would swear every other word. In the case of Gran Torino, a Korean veteran who show racism towarRAB Chinese people cannot be portrayed by anyone younger than Clint Eastwood so it is not at all a case of Clint jumping on the profanity bandwagon instead of choosing scripts with a PG family friendly rating. He wanted to tell the tale of that grizzled war veteran and he wanted it to be realistic. This is where I disagree in part with your point that swearing just "paRAB out a poor movie plot". Sometimes it is central to the plot. In any case with swearing, once that expectation has been accepted, it is fairly easy to let the profanity just wash over you, well personally speaking it is.

Lets get back on topic and not worry about swearing RAB.

Eastwood has had a fantastic career and his films have given me hours of viewing pleasure, my favourites are Outlaw Josey Wales and Pale Rider.

Never went off topic mate. We were discussing Clint Eastwood's more recent films and how some viewers are turned off by the level of swearing in them.

I would very much like to agree with you-but I cannot.
With this type of thinking all the lovely old movies of every genre are rendered insignificant-swearing does not improve a plot!
As for letting it `wash over me`-that is part of the equation that has resulted in the very low standarRAB we have in all areas-many are quite prepared to put up with these-I`m afraid I am not!
However, you are very welcome to your views, even if I cannot agree with them.
How can these people who he is portraying justify using these
expletives-those in my circle do not use this type of language and I do not accept it-and I don`t care who they are!
Some think it is clever-it is clever to make yourself understood without lowering yourself in this way-we human beings are supposed to be a superior race on this planet.
The Clint Eastwood of today is representative of the low criterion many have come to accept-he is a very poor and sad reflection of the young Rowdy Yates.

It`s this type of slovenly attitude towarRAB speech that has had great input into the general mess human beings find themselves in today-promoted by that `saddo`-Eastwood-he should know better!(especially at 80!).
He might be a good actor, but that doen`t automatically make his negative actions correct!
He`s no better than me-I`m not at all impressed or phazed!
`pigs in muck` comes to mind!
