Climbing Great Buildings : ITV1

Probably with a cherry picker.

and it would have to be passed by "'elf 'n' safety inspector."

It makes me smile when in many programmes the commentator bangs on about how dangerous it is for someone on the end of "yet another rope" and I'm thinking "Hang on! What about the poor cameraman taking the pictutes?"

Can't believe the hostile comments about this series. There was a similar letter in last week's rRadio Times, and a positive reply in this week's. I found it thoroughly absorbing. I didn't mind at all the 'inane' comments of 'Lu' in her foil-trpe role to Jonathan; in fact, it was quite amusing. As I haven't got a head for heights, I find watching views from tall buildings/climbing/base jumping etc an incredibly exciting (if somewhat scary) experience, and this show provided plenty. I sat aghast during the Burma bridge crossing at St Pancras.

Hope there's another series.

It kinda passes the time, but just isn't doing 'it' for me.
Saw some views/perspectives of the Lloyds building I hadn't seen before, but still managed to turn me off.
I blame the presenter and poor content IMO, the climbing bit, getting up close and personal with the building bit might have some value if handled by a different presenter.

Get Fred Dibnah out of the archive and watch him wander about pointing at things then illustrating various points with lovely drawings, it's cheaper too.

Going well OT and into real life, any Londoners get out and about staring at buildings at Openhouse the other week?

Ohhh I would have loved to see the Salisbury Cathedral one, did they go to the very top of the Spire?? I enjoyed this series, the older buildings and Cathedrals more though

Err..

I don't think they'd use a cherry picker on every building, just those a few storeys high and most interior situations.
Most tall buildings have interior access to the the highest parts, or do you think they fired up grappling hooks, as in films about the Commandos, or climbed up like Spiderman to fit fix the ropes?

This is true, but for a TV programme, every possible precaution will have been taken.
Whatever is seen, it will have been tested out thoroughly beforehand.
Probably the safest "climbing" ever seen on TV.

1768 ft!! Can't believe I watched that - probably damaged me for life! I'm holding on to my chair!

That particular video eems to be widely quoted on the web. Tanks for posting. Everyone should watch... if you can handle it.

If it's under 100-110 metres high pretty sure Wumag and/or Bronto do a 'cherry picker' (Aerial platform) that'll get that high.
As the other FM says, probably not necessary for a lot of buildings as there's access for maintenance and construction already there.

I've seen guys swinging doing the roof on the Olympics velodrome, it's not that technical, throw rope around steel tie it off do this twice then attach themselves to rope.
Leap frog across/around a roof like that.

.

That's what I was asking, obviously they didn't get a Cherry Picker on top of the Liver building, but the birds were on top of a dome, if they just threw a rope around the legs of the birds then I wouldn't have trusted it because those birds have been there a 100yrs and look a bit decayed now, in fact they look like a good gust of wind would blow them down.

Again I didn't see that program, I gave up watching until I noticed the Lloyds building episode.
It's a tallish building in an exposed position by an expanse of water.
A good gust of wind hasn't blown them away so far.
Damn good bet that at most 600 kilos hanging off ropes wasn't going to pull them off the roof.
Pretty sure they're also tied down with cables on the wings now too, but I haven't seen a recent picture.
