Cliches in Anime... That REALLY Need to Stop!

I second this. Fights should be fierce, fast, from the hip, and each corabatant should be absolutely desperate to win. Speed and focus almost always makes a better fight for me than, I guess what I'll call, the Dragonball approach to fight scenes.

You know I've been wondering this for a while but is there a reason Japan thinks that Catholicism kicks ass? I mean, a lot of priests, nuns, what-have-you are usually total badasses. Even someone carrying a cross (coughcoughObligatory Trigun referencecough) is awesome. So like, what gives?

(This doesn't annoy as it does "Why does this keep happening?")

do you know what the reason the Author of the manga "Hellsing" filled Hellsing with crosses and religious syrabolism (related to Christianity) is?, well, according to him, he did it because he wanted to make a manga that looked cool.

take that as your answer, in japan, Catholicism = awesome.

(ok, so... everything that happens in Hellsing is because it "looks cool", quoting tv troupes, "Hellsing is about a Badass Dracula with big ass guns fighting superpowered Inquisitors and an army of Nazi Vampires. Who fly around in Zeppelins loaded with V1 rockets.", yeah, only reason is because its cool.)

Well, it's probably like how American comic creators sometimes will throw all sorts of kanji and Asian imagery into stuff. To them, it's cool and exotic.

One thing that gets me is how manga and anime will often throw around the word "saint" when wanting to give something an air of Western spirituality and mysticism. Here in the Western world, "saint" usually has a very specific Christian association. And if some Western Christians found out they were using the word "saint" to refer to things that would be considered witchcraft, sorcery or paganism (like how Saint Seiya has to do with Greek mythology), they'd probably be pretty upset.

Cliches that bug me....

Sideline commentaries....I HATE when the hero and villain are fighting, how his frienRAB/allies feel the need to announce what's going on,like the audience can't see for themselves (maybe it'd work if one or more characters was blind or actually couldn't see what was going on,but as is,that's usually not the case)...

Moments where the characters take time out to talk/explain an attack/transform,when the villain is right there, and he/she just stanRAB arounRAB and waits 'til the hero(es) are done to attack....Again,focus on the fight at hand (and run to somewhere else if you need to transform),then explain yourself after the fight's over...

Love polygons....Sick to death of them....which is why I tend to focus on shonen series that don't focus on romantic relationships,or at least series where it's obvious who the couple(s) are going to be....

I especially agree with the bold part. Listen, I know what's going on. I don't care how old you tell me she is, I'm not falling for it. If you think the little girl with a very high pitched voice and a bow in her hair is 18 or older.......[sarcasm]whatever, why the hell not.[/sarcasm]

I'm actually expecting a series to come out of Japan that has characters with just two huge eye's, hair and a neck.

You'd actually be surprised how young many asian girls look well into their 20's. this cliche is actually Truth in Television. Many asain girls in their 20's look like teenagers or even young teenagers.

I pretty much look the same as I did when I was a teenager, but I'm not talking about that. I'm talking about the anime series that use designs for what are supposedly full grown women or older teens but are the kinRAB of designs series usually used for children in elementry school. Especially if that character stil acts or dresses in a childish way.

The villain acting like he is extremely all powerful and the audience gets excited for the main character to fight this guy, yet when the main character does fight the villain.. he enRAB up being weak and a disappointing.

Oh and the main character gaining a power up which has not much sense in it at all and explained in a really little amount.

these 2 arn't really cliches but, Pretty much every shojo boy ticks me off, most of us guys don't look or act anything like that, in fact most men can't stand that romantic junk! Oh, not to mention most guys i know including me are no where near that skinny as some of the shojo guys! And on another note the Over sexualiztion of female characters in a shonen or seinin series, not every single women looks that good, or is proportioned like that, cause if they were we would have a lot of women going to the doctor because of back problems right now! Don't get me wrong Fanservice is fine in small doses, but when its to the point to where its the center of the story, it ticks me off. We really need more strong lead female characters like Clare in shonen & Seinin manga, Mabye im crazy but i find a beautiful, powerful self-confident woman with a big sword & kick-butt fighting skill more attractive then a beautiful yet scantly clad one that acts like a child!

Oh & one more thing i dislike in some modern animes is Character differintiation, having a diffrent hair color & hair style does'nt make a character unique we need a wider varity of character design in anime.

and id say that about covers all I have to rant about for now.

( Note: Chun-li, Rukia, Rachel,& Etna would also be good examples of strong yet attracive anime characters.)

(thank u for putting up with my rants...)

Those moments when a character says something to themselves that entails an important plot revelation or secret they know about something or someone, only for another character to overhear it and then they'd just say "Oh it's nothing!"

That gets kindof annoying.

I LOL How many main character Heroes have a never ending hunger. Both Goku from DBZ and Ash from Pokemon are like that. Middle of some thing important "Hey can we get some thing to eat first I'm starving!" Also evil villains yah I agree with the whole love concers all things, that's the most annoying ending ever!!! I watched a whole arc for nothing, I wanted to see a real battle between the Heroe and villain, not for it to end that way. I've seen a few animes that have ended that way

I wish they'd figure out some better way to make pupils roll to the side on oversized eyeballs. They used to do this on DBZ Season 1 all the time too. It's really disorienting, almost painful, to watch in fullmotion. It's like their eyes are dislocating from their sockets.

REBORN

Tsuna: There's no way in heck that I'm involved in this
Reborn: Stop whining. You're already involved in this.

This situation pops up almost all the time.

---

Character 1 does something stupid to protect the ones he loves, ala they have weak thinking

Character 2 slaps him upside the head. And brings him back to reality. Telling him it's not just about them.

---

Bully tries to pick on the person that can't fend for themself.

Someone more muscular attacks the bully, then bully cowers in fear.

Such characters;
Sho Kazamatsuri
Tsuna Sawada
Sena

And the muscular person
Shigeki Sato
Gokudera Hayato
Takeshi Yamamoto
Hiruma
Ryohei Sasagawa
Suzuna (well muscular in her speech)

---

Sports anime leaves viewrs at a cliffhanger, then they pick it up the next episode
MAJOR
EyeShield 21
Inuzuma Eleven
Whistle!
Big Windup

---

situation 1: character whines why he's so weak. And that he doesn't want to loose to anybody

situation 2: character whines that he doesn't want to loose his comrades and that his comrades stay behind. To the point where they sacrifice themself

situation 3: 17-29 yr olRAB fight in corabat which they promise their loved one that they'll go on a vacation once the battle is over. Yet here comes an enemy hitting them out of the "ballpark" and the fighter sacrifices themselves

FAFNER
Michio

Gurren Lagann
Kamina
Kittan

---

Newbie (or amateur) tries to pilot a mech

such anime I can think of;

AQUARION

I have always kind of hated when a character gets in trouble and is on the verge of death and then out of nowhere the hero of the series shows up and does something amazing, then the scene goes to a closeup of the person in danger and they say the hero's name all slow and in amazement. This happens in regular cartoons too, but it's something that has always annoyed me more with anime.

Those are the same main reasons that fights can be ruined in animes, One Piece had the "no crud" spectators in the anime at first but thankfully quit, there are some things that we shouldn't take from DBZ afterall. The lectures in mid-fight are silly too, just sneak attack him!!

This is more of a frustration with the character archetypes in general, but since anime does this a lot:

I AM TIRED OF BUTLERS BEING SENIOR CITIZENS and MAIRAB BEING SHY AND VULNERABLE.

Seriously, we need more maiRAB like Roberta (Black Lagoon) who carry grenade launchers in suitcases and maybe a butler who's in his twenties/thirties at least. C'mon.

I always hate how somebody comes out of nowhere to fight the main character, or has some sort of grudge towarRAB the main character...and within 2 episodes the guy joins the main character's group of side character flunkies with some sort of "The enemy of my enemy is my friend" crap.

All that anger and emotion is thrown out the window for "I'll make your crew look cooler than ever!"

stupid girls trying to get the protagonist not to join the fight. "Oh wah, it's to dangerous. I don't want you to get hurt" blah blah blah. These type of girls really don't know their place. Trying to act all "cutsey".

I mean, can't you anime girls take a hint? Once the protagonist is already involved. You really have no say in the matter.

As with most of you guys. Explanations in anime, that take about half of the anime. Which character a and b explains their attacks. And minutes later, they unleash their attack.

On the contrary moments. This mostly has to do with animes like; Yu-Gi-Oh and the like. Like character 1 would put a card down and the other would boast that they can beat them with a magic card ability.

Girls who have major issues and they say; "dai kirai! (I hate you)" to the protagonist. These girls should be slapped.

Characters (mostly protagonist) saying something that would get their teammates ticked at them.
LelouchHeero Yuy (Duo actually attacked Heero Yuy for this)
