Cliched, hoary old movie critiscisms...ban them now!

You may not be directly defending a particular film but the George Lucas line you posted in bold was clearly a reference to the criticisim dished out at the Star Wars prequels by many original Star Wars fans.

I dont think any reasonable person would disagree that people's taste will change over the course of time, but there are too many people who, refusing to accept the Star Wars prequels weaknesses, twist that perfectly resonable rationale as an all too convinient way to dismiss the criticisims the films received. Their hollow argument has become cliched.

Like this somehow excuses how crap they are, these type of lines get peddled all the time in the defense of bad film making.

Normally people can get a mention of Citizen Kane in there as well with these type of excuses.

I like this thread. The opening post made me laugh as I see them everywhere, here and on other forums. While I don't wish to post about them, I found your observations of them quite funny :)
 
I always prefer books - I hardly ever watch films of books I love, on the odd occasion I get given a dvd of a book I love (think Harry Potter), I do say it's not as good as the book.

Mainly I don't understand why film directors think they can invent and cut from perfectly good books and expect people not to protest.

If they only want to use the title why bother?
