Classics lost to the young

It's not a matter of nostalgia. It's what we consider a classic not being known by today's youth. Like Popeye or Woody Woodpecker, heck even the original Looney Tunes and Yogi Bear. My answer if they are, blame CN/Nick/Disney for over-reliance on their own made programming and playing them 40 times a day per show.

I've had a few random experiences with 'toons being "lost" in the youth. The only ones that stick into my mind is when my godson was 7 or 8 and couldn't recognize many of the Disney characters at Disneyland (I asked "who's that?" pointing to Goofy and he replied "...Bugs Bunny?"). Another time was with working with teens and one of my coworkers (who was only a few years younger then I was) didn't know who Scooby-Doo or the Flinstones were and had to endure the teens mocking him for not knowing.

These are quite possibly, two of the dumbest statements I have ever read. If what is considered a classic today is all down to nostalga, where would it end?. Everyone has nostalga for something, but only the true classics last. Anyone who grew up with and has nostalga for "The Flintstones", likely also grew up with and has nostalga for the likes of "Birdman and the Galaxy Trio", "The Hillbilly Bears", "The Impossibles" and "Peter Potamus". So tell me, why is it that "The Flintstones" are remembered and most likely noone here recognised any of the other shows I listed?

I think that's an excellent point, really. Kids today may be aware that there are many more cartoons out there that don't air on TV anymore that maybe their parents/older siblings used to watch, but they just don't care.

Having been an animation fan for as long as I've been alive, I can't relate. When I was a kid, whenever I would hear about a show I'd never seen, I'd always want to find out more about it. Until its big revival in the mid-80s, I'd never seen an episode of The Jetsons. But when I first heard about it, I started asking my parents/aunts/uncles about it because I wanted to know more about it. And I was quite annoyed no station in the area was running it.

Our CBS affiliate for the longest time never ran the Saturday morning lineup, but I still knew exactly what was on it, and it bugged the hell out of me that I had to miss out. Whenever we would go out of town, I'd never miss an opportunity to catch Muppet Babies or Garfield and Friends.

But that's me. I'm probably a large exception to the rule (most of us rabroadrs are, I suspect). Most kids today are probably perfectly content to just settle in and watch the quite limited diet of shows only produced in the last 5 years from Nick and CN.

But then, I'm sure there are the few - the future Toon Zone members - who daily curse the fact that they don't get Boomerang and that Toon Disney rarely ever plays DuckTales or classic Mickey shorts. But at least today's pre-pubescent animation fans have access to DVDs and the Internet. That's something, anyway.

I rarely talk animation with kids for some reason ^^;;

However I'm always finding people my age who never heard of Beast Wars and Gargoyles... these shows didn't really cross the language barrier around here :/

Found something interesting two weeks ago. I had too bring some DVD's too keep kids happy during a shore day. They where about 6-7 years old. I put on Thundercats, and Real Ghostbusters. They didn't know Thundercats, but it eventually won out over ball playing as they kept on coming back too the TV longer and longer :).

They DID know the Stay Puft Marshmellow man from Ghostbusters, however. So at least some classics could still work today unchanged. Studio executives know nothing when trying too 'update' a property :).

Actually I do agree on the fact that little kids are missing out on alot of classic cartoons. I remember not long ago talking to my brother about CN in the 90's and when they had all the Hanna Barbera Shows,the Tom and Jerry Shorts,the old Looney Tunes shorts ect. We mentioned Yogi and our little sisters asked who that was. >_> My sisters are only 7-8 years younger then me and they got into CN because I watched it all the time. But what they remember is most stuff from 2002 or so onwards....not really any classics sides Tom & Jerry.

I was born in 89,but still got to watch many of the 80's shows while growing up,TMNT and Transformers I dont remember clearly (even if I saw them on the local channels) but I eventually became kind of a Thundercats and Voltron fan (thanks to the fact CN aired them). Ive watched CN ever since it debuted back in the early 90's and the fact that it has changed so dramatically to the point it airs NOTHING (ok it airs the top 5 wich has Dexter and PPG..but they air it very early,not that many kids wake up early) of what made the channel so recognisable and the came back on its word of airing ONLY cartoons 24/7 is a damn shame. o.o I feel really sorry for the kids nowadays...not only CN but Nick and Disney have gone down the tubes.
