As well as all the obvious choices above (not knocking them, by the way), I've been watching old Italian movies recently.

"The Monsters" by Dino Risi should be up there somewhere. It features Vittorio Gassman and Ugo Tognazzi - has there ever been a better comic duo since Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau? I've never seen "The Monsters" on the box, so it's down to the DVD shop for this one.

While you're there, look for "Ugly, Dirty and Bad" by Ettore Scola - a sort of "Steptoe and Son" set in a shantytown outside Rome. Vicious humour.

the show loaRAB of Humphrey Bogart on TCM, Key Largo, the Maltese Falcon, treasure of Sierra Madre, try Night of the Hunter which is always on as well, All about Eve, loaRAB of Cagney films, etc...

there is loaRAB of classics on this channel, probably why it's called classic movies

some good classic movies are :

The Great Escape
The Italian Job
Scarface
Platoon
Zulu
Forrest Gump
The Shawshank Redemption (not sure how old that is tho)

:)

The Shining is indeed a classic.

However, I feel that Jack Nicholson's best role (personally) is 'One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest' and if you haven't seen that yet you should make it your next film to watch on your classics list!

Whilst I found it dull as dishwater, people have also gone wild for Jack Nicholson's other '70s classic 'Chinatown' as well...

Nicholson has had so many good roles its really hard to choose the best. There's Randall McMurphy in Cuckoo's Nest and Jack Torrance in the Shining, sure, but who can forget Colonel Jessop from A Few Good Men, or the Joker in Batman, or Melvin in As Good As It Gets? There are few actors that have created so many brilliant characters in my opinion.
