Classic Disney movies on TV

Why is it that on terrestrial tv no channel ever airs the classic old Disney flicks like; Beauty and the beat , little mermaid, cinderella, etc , they just air the same usual ones like bednob and sword in the stone?

The classic cartoons such as Snow White and Bambi appear very rarely on terrestrial tv - as another poster says, maybe Disney simply charge too much. Shame as would be nice for a whole new generation of kiRAB to discover them.

Disney are protective over their real classics and always have been.

The genuine classics like Snow White ,Bambi etc have never to my knowledge been aired on tv - even on The Disney Channel.

There are a selection of about 10 films that Disney regularly release to dvd then delete every few years in the same way they used to re-release them to the cinema every 7 years.

The only one of that batch I recall seeing on tv was Pinocchio which IIRC was shown on ITV in the 80's.

Run of the mill animation like Dumbo,Alice In Wonderland etc often pop up on tv and appear on the Disney channels and usually only get deleted on dvd when a new release is in the pipeline.

I was quite surprised to see Sleeping Beauty on Cinemagic today as it's one of the 10.
I dont think its a question of cost - this collection of films are unavailable to tv and mostly its always been like that.
Disney took years to bring them out on video too

Of the modern classics I think Lion King and Beauty and the Beast are included so they wont be on tv regularly.

You might get a one off showing over Xmas one year but by and large they dont get shown.

This retains the mystique of the films that there has been for 70 years .

Regular tv showings would spoil that.
Thats also why this package of titles always gets released on dvd/bd for a limited period - it helps sell the discs quick and means the discs also retain their value too

Its also how George Lucas retains the same sort of mystique over Star Wars- certainly the original trilogy.

TV broadcasts of those are very carefully controlled and limited unlike most other movies.

Its most likely got something to do with the Disney Vault. Movies like Beauty and the Beast, the little meramid, snow white, bambi, peter pan etc are kept in the Disney Vault and released ever 5-10 yrs or so for a limited time before being put back in the vault. While their in the vault no one can broadcast them on TV and once their out of the vault they can only be shown by Disney themselves (on the disney channells). Movies like finding nemo Bednob, mary poppins etc are shown because they are never put in the vault, disney don't see them to be as valuble as the others hence these are the only ones other channels can broadcast.

Sad truth if you want to watch one of the classic disney movies you have to buy them on DVD.

I've been wanting to watch Cinderella and sleeping beauty for ever as these were the movies i remember from my childhood but cinderellas still in the vault, although sleeping beautys out so can get that.

Didn't I just say all this?

Even the Disney Channels do not show things like Snow White IIRC.

But who would want to watch their rubbish channels anyway?

Today they take a classic like Sleeping Beauty - its brand new restored version in its full widescreen ratio with Dolby Digital 5.1 sound and even in HD - then they go and slap one of their stupid logos on the bottom left hand corner of the screen making for annoying viewing

I would have expected a premium channel with no aRAB to cater for older viewers and treat movies and viewers with respect as Sky Movies do

I understand why Disney withhold them, but don't really see the point these days. When my son was little we bought every Disney film on Video, so watched them all the time anyway.

By all, I mean the classics, obviously :D

it's probably just to keep the money coming in. With a franchise like disney people are willing to spend the extra money so they take advantage of it. To be honest although it can get annoying that you have to buy them to watch them and their hard to get hold of cause of the whole vault buisness, i do think it is a good thing also. I mean if they were constantly available and regularly being played people would probably get bored of them really quick and the disney magic would be lost this way it carrys on for yrs and yrs.

I remember a few years back, Bambi was shown on Disney Channel quite a bit, and then they announced that they'd only be showing it once more and that'd be it. Never mention why and I don't think I've seen it since.

Certain Disney classics have different broadcast rights for various reasons. Alice In Wonderland, Robin Hood and particularly The Sword In The Stone have been on terrestrial several times. Notice how these are stories that have been made time and time again in various TV series' and films (in the case of TSITS you've got to count all the King Arthur/Merlin versions), meaning these are less of a hot property.

Growing up all I ever remember being on TV were Dumbo, Robin Hood and The Sword In The Stone.

BTW, Mary Poppins and Bedknobs & Broomsticks aren't officially "Disney Animated Classics". They're a special series and the only ones with live action sequences in any of the official classics are Fantasia and that terrible series of ones from the 1940s (Three Caballeros, Melody Time etc.)
