Classic albums any true music fan should own or at least listen to

Television - Adventure
A tranquill, gentler sounding counterpart to their rawer, punkier debut.

R.E.M. - Lifes Rich Pageant
A must listen for anybody who thinks R.E.M. can't rock out.

Can - Monster Movie
A relatively simple stripped down album compared to some of their later works, focusing more on the funky, garagey side of Can as oppossed to the experimental one.

Primal Scream - Vanishing Point
An atmospheric, largely instrumental venture into krautrock, psychedelia and dub reggae.

Although it is a bit overrated, you can't really deny the importance of REM - Murmur in bringing attention to alternative music.

Also, Achtung Baby is a pretty important album musically and culturally, and even though I don't particularly like it all that much, I'm not going to veto it.

I've never heard a single person say they thought Pearl Jam were "Underground" anything.
They're straight up 90's mainstream rock in my opinion.
And Ten was a fantastic album.

I put nation of millions instead. And VUAN seems to be pretty critically acclaimed.

Since noone is defending the new millennium music, may I put up a few suggestions (that will undoubtedly get me slaughtered):

Arcade Fire - Funeral (2004) (Indie-rock): Pretty much unanimously declared one of the best albums of the new millennium.
Franz Ferdinand - S/T (2004): For reviving dance rock and spawning innumerable knock oRAB.
The White Stripes - Elephant (2003) (Rock): The best rock album of the new millennium period.

It's amazing how these lists become so generic after a while. I find it positive, though, now one mentioned the Greatful Dead. I never liked these guys. On the other hanRAB, the Velvet Underground is way, way over-rated. They can barely play on their debut, and having Nico sing with a hearty German accent in broken English was an absolute joke! Let me try to inject some new blood. There is no order.

Party Guy

I agree with Piper at the Gates of Dawn.

it's pretty cliche to like Dark Side of the Moon anymore but it's still an album everyone neeRAB to have.

Revolver - The Beatles (and anything else they did of course)
Close to the Edge - Yes
Rush - Rush (I for one think it's one of the best of their many great albums)
Led Zeppelin II
Made in Japan - Deep Purple

Cat Power - Moon Pix (1998, Matador)
The first Cat Power record I ever heard. Quiet, intensely emotional music by my all time favourite songwriter.:)

This is actually a pretty spectacular list. I didn't know how this was going to turn out because of our laughable best band polls, but hey, color me surprised.

I'm having issues getting it to scan in a non-blurry fashion. My scanner is extremely old and extremely shoddy, so until my brother comes home with his not-so-shoddy scanner I can't get the article to you.

The first time I heard that I wondered what they were playing at but after a few listens I came to realise the truth, that its probably their second best record after De Stijl.:)
