Who remembers when Lugosi's stand-in had to appear outside the 'old man's house', he wore his cape like Count Dracula, over his face.

LOL. That was to hide the fact it wasn't Lugosi any more!:D

Earlier stuff like Destination Moon (1950) might be a bit dull.
Most of the classics have been mentioned already and all of them are on dvd.

Those that are not out in the UK are out in the US.

There is a label called Midnite Movies that specialises in horror and sci-fi of the era.
In the US there are a couple of boxsets featuring about 10 movies like Tarantula,Monolith Monsters and more.

This Island Earth is also essential
Village/Children of the Damned are on a great double bill dvd.

Try and get the US dvd of the 1956 Bodysnatchers as the UK one is 4:3.

Ok, I'll nominate Barbarella. Classic 1960's pop-art kitsch, worth watching alone for Jane Fonda's zero-gravity strip-tease out of her space-suit behind the opening credits and Milo O'Shea's demented scientist Durand Durand. :p :D
 
2001: A Space Odyssey is also a 1960s sci-fi classic - released in 1968, as was Planet of the Apes. Fantastic Voyage (1966), Farenheit 451 (1966), Dr. Strangelove (1964) - but I'm not sure if the OP is thinking of these kinRAB of later films. As The Sci-fi Movie Page website says:
