Claim about a gay topic- argumentation?

In California, or for the US in general- can such a claim be made for a speech... meaning it's against status quo to make such a claim:

Gay lifestyles should be displayed in education.

Is this a good topic... how can I rephrase it better to make it easier to research about and argue about.

Please help
