The earth is but a spec of dust in the whole galaxy. So.. How do we know we don't have even smaller civilizations living on us so small to not be seem with a microscope.

So nat'ralists observe, a flea
Hath smaller fleas that on him prey,
And these have smaller fleas that bite 'em,
And so proceed ad infinitum."

You already have the funny answers. The serious answer is quantum physics. We can already see, with electron microscopes, individual atoms. From the way that atoms, electrons, and sub-atomic particles behave, we can be sure that only so much information can be packed into one atom. It's just a few 1000 bits (about the amount of information in a few dozen words.) That amount of information is way way too small for any thing at that level to be alive, much less have a civilization.

or what if something else that no one could ever possibly observe were happening as well?
