...who are to inhabit them? "Most men appear never to have considered what a house is, and are needlessly poor all their lives because they think that they must have such a one as their neighbors have."

--- Thoreau (Walden, Chapter:Economy)

Your question is based on a faulty assumption - that no men are being "improved". This is false - education is the thing that improves men - and women - and it is being improved all the time.

Well, I agree with most of the people of whom have answered already, but I have something different to add. I like the luxuries this new 21st century civilization has created. I work so I can have money so that I can afford them. I do not do so to achieve something better than the next person. I do so to enjoy life within this society. I consider myself closer to enlightenment. Not enlightened, just closer to it. Unfortunately, many men envy one another's luxuries. They work towards those luxuries, staying in and suffering in piles of debt only to "out do" the next
person. This greed has existed for ages. That is why one of the Ten Commandments is not to envy another's luxuries. I follow the Ten Commandments, not because Moses said God told us to, but because that is the path to enlightenment. That is why I say Christianity and Buddhism are so much alike. They both have the same teachings. I leave you with this thought. Technology should not be existent just to make life easier. One day, maybe that won't be there. Then humanity will be stuck having to relearn the old methods. Technology, in my perspective, has a greater importance: To discover more about this planet and the Universe itself.

The improved houses are luxuries. With more luxuries, comes less responsibilities. In today's day and age, people have the luxuries that make everyday life easier. This has taught generations that they don't have to do much in life. i.e. they don't have to really work hard. These kinds of people abuse the freedoms that they have. So many times do these people forget that with freedom comes responsibility.
