Cingular SE W810i or SE W900

Yeah I know they're not exactly in the same class since W900 has so many more features.

My problem is that if I go with the W900 and something happens, there is no insurance of any sort that I can get on that phone that would replace it if I were to loose it or get water damage.

With Cingular's lockline, I do have that.

If I do get the W900 its going to be babied like hell. But still...

So should I wait for a month or two for the W810i or just spend the big bucks and get the W900?

depends what you need the phone for... right? i mean.. w810 is quadband.. so it makes it very very popular. w900i is decent too.. and its not that much more expensive. like 100 dollars more now.. w900i will probably hold in value more than w810i later too.. if thats a factor for you

I wasn't aware that the W900 had a lot more features then the W810i. What are they?

Anyway, either way I would go with the W810 personally because I am not good about babying me devices. However, if you are, go for the W900.

If im living in an urban environment(close to sacramento) do you think I need the 850mhz?

the reason why im leaning towards the w900 is because it has plenty of built in internal memory. and i like the swivel design since i am very use to that from the S710a.
just dont know if those two features are really worth a 100 dollars more.

edit:
another plus is that the phone is 3G but im using cingular so its not like 3G is going to be available for me anytime soon. at least in terms of being able to make video calls and such.

no dude, the w900 shouldnt even be a choice for you. cingular is annoying because youre gonna need 850 and 3g wont work on it. just get the w810, personally i prefer pda phones, regular phones are just too plain, but if you like your s710a, id get the w810 or possibly a w600 which is actually about the same. so get the w810 or you could wait... the phones now arent too good... just wait for a few more months for the nokia n80 or something... theres just so many new phones coming out that will be good so id hate to see you being dissappointed buying either of these

Yes, good point kisher, I'm not sure Cingular will even allow phones without GSM 850 on their network, since they rely so heavily on it.

I didn't know cingular relied so heavily on 850. my main reason for opting for a w810/w900 is the walkman feature.
plus the swivel action i like & i heard you can get 5+ hours of full screen video out of the w900.

but i guess what good is the phone without the service.

i would consider the 8125 but that thing just looks so big. being a college student, i dont know if i want something that bulky(though its probably nice to have since I can take notes on there, work with doc/excel/pdf etc. I might have to go to a cingular store and check that out I guess.

sigh...i guess i'll be waiting it out then for the w810 or a pda like phone(8125/n80), unless someone can give me a really good reason to get the w900

the W900 is pretty bulky if I recall correctly.

And your a college student and you can afford a W810/W900? Wow, I wish I was in your shoes, expensive shoes I bet.

yea its pretty bulky so ive read in reviews. compared to the s710a its only like a gram or two heavier so i wont have too much trouble. but if this 850mhz thing is going to be a big problem with cingular then i dont want it. id much rather get a n80/8125.

so now its 810/n80/8125.
w600 is out of the question since there is no expandable memory.
sigh...still no close to finding a phone for myself.
does the n80 have music playback capabilities similar to that of the w810?\

heh, btw echid, the w810 i was going to get through cingular for like 150 or whatever it will cost. the w900, i was going to put about 400 towards it(250 or so comes from the mp3 player i was saving up for, and 150 from the phone i was going to buy from cingular). ive been saving up for a while now. im no richie rich :P

If you are a data whore like I am, I think the w810's EDGE will be useful for you.

Load up opera mini and google local and you'll be set.

As much as I love the w900 and s710a's swivel design, a phone is a phone first before anything. Here's to hoping they release a w910a that's quadband and works with the Cingular's 3G service in the future.

I have actually never used the data feature on my phone. The plans are a bit expensive and I'm never that far away from the computer anyways.

Having wifi would be nice though since that allows me to avoid the data plans for the most part. 8125 and n80 have that but I dont know how good they are when it comes to mp3 playback(in terms of the UI).

i would definitely go with the 8125, but it depends how much you talk on the phone... on average how much? the 8125 does everything in the world. the call quality is good but wont be as good as the n80 or w810

I see, now THAT sounds like me. Ya, mp3 players are dumb in the head (yup, thats all I have for an insult)...cellphones are waaaaaaaay better. And I think the W810 will cost more then $150 from Cingular.

Hey NoToRiOuS1, what do you really need in a phone? An MP3 player, camera, voice, data, etc?

If you don't care about a camera, the Motorola SLVR L7 can be had for pretty cheap and the ROKR E1 for even less. While it is true that iTunes limits both phones to 100 songs on the device at a time, you can buy two or more transflash memory cards and load them up with 100 songs each then swap them as necessary. The Sony Ericssons will hold more songs and they have better cameras, but they cost more too.

As for 850 MHz, Cingular could care less whether you have it or not. It will be you who loses service if you go into an area not covered by a 1900 MHz network.

As for the 3G portion of the W900i, it only works on 2100 MHz networks. Cingular's 3G networks are 850 and 1900 MHz.

I've tried out the W900, W800, ROKR E1 and SLVR L7 and my SIM card is presently in the L7 because it works great for me. Prior to getting the L7, I was using the ROKR because the RF performance was absolutely superior to any phone I've tried in my area.

i talk maybe 20 hrs a month. thats probably a bit higher than my usual actually.

heh you're right. but the 150 was just wishful thinking on my part.

I was considering the SLVR but the limit thing kills it for me. I even considered the multiple transflash but those things are so small it will be no time until I loose one of em. Not to mention I have way more than 200 songs.

As for the 850Mhz and what you said, you're right, I know cingular won't care. This is why most likely I will not be getting the w900.
Because like I said, what good is a $1000 phone if there is no service.

Also, from what you said it seems, that even though I'm gaining a lotta features on the phone, I'm loosing just as many in terms of service availibility/connectivity.

I think mp3 playing is more important than wifi or a keyboard ATM.
kisher12991: any idea on how long id be able to listen to mp3 for with the WMP?

Another option is to wait until the ROKR E2 comes out. It has no limitation and can support a full sized SD card. There are 2GB cards on ebay for cheap and they can hold about 500 songs. Also, the E2 is quad-band, supports stereo Bluetooth, USB 2.0, 1.3 MP camera, FM radio and more (http://www.motorola.com/motoinfo/product/details.jsp?globalObjectId=132). It should be coming out soon.

The first question you have to ask yourself, is how limited will you be if you choose a phone without 850? Living in the states, and having Cingular as your provider, you're gonna want that 850 once your market gets integrated. Then you have you ask yourself what kind of features you're looking for in the phone. I have the w810i and I love the sucker to death, especially since I updated the firmware to rid myself of that god forsaken dropped call issue. Plus, the w810i is practically the size of the t637, small. The w900 is larger and buklier than the s710.

850 is a must have so no question about that.

what i want in a phone: most important is a dedicated mp3 player of some sort(itunes, wmp, walkman), camera(doesn't matter the MP), wifi(can live without it), pda type functionality(can live without it).

the rokr e2 fits the bill but i like the SE user interface a lot more than the moto UI. i've used the slvr and the razr and they are just too plain compared to SE.

I've used non-850 phones on Cingular and TMobile in Oakland, CA (not too far from where you are in Sac.) and they generally work fine though there are some dead spots I've noticed that weren't dead on my Mot V551 (with 850 band). The carriers could care less, though my current w800i doesn't show up on my tmobile.com profile since they don't sell it themselves.

I'm currently using the SE w800i on TMobile and it works great save for the ocassional dead spot --- mainly in a windowless concrete computer lab at work where most people don't have reception but I did with the 551.

I don't travel that much, and *rarely* away from urban areas so the lack of 850 wasn't a deal breaker and hopefully won't ever be an issue for me (knock wood).

From what I understand, the w900 doesn't do that much more (if anything?) than the w800/810 ... and the screen isn't actually that much bigger, is it? It's mainly the swivel and internal memory that set them apart (yes?).

Part of me wishes I had the 810i just to have the extra band, but not enough to sell my w800 and add cash to get it. EDGE is nice but data over cellular is so expensive I never use it. Nice thing about a wifi device like the MDA/8125 is the wifi for web/email and even skype usage.

MDA/8125 is a thick, bulky beast, though. I was surprised when I picked one up for the first time -- it's a thick mofo! Also kind of awkward to hold up to your ear -- the guy at the store told me people generally use 'em with a bluetooth earpiece instead. The new HP treo-ish PDA phone that Cingular carries has a nicer form factor, though the QWERTY board layout on the MDA/8125 is nice and roomy.

Also, I don't think the 810i has a lens cap cover which for me is actually a consideration -- I keep my phone in my pocket and my old v551's lens got covered in dust all the time. Minor thing for many people, consideration for me since i got the 800i mainly for the camera.

Also, as you said ... No Way the 810i sells for $150 on Cingular. Sorry :-( Maybe in time it'll be that cheap/cheaper through buy.com or amazon ... but I bet it goes for $250+ with 2 yr committment + after rebate if/when it ever debuts on Cingular.
