This wasn't put together by me, but by a different user. It's also posted in the Cingular Smartphone forums, but I feel it's appropriate here, as well. It's a solution that I always presumed would work, and thought I had suggested, but perhaps I didn't.
In any case, basically you're using NSS and NSU to change the product code on your E62 from Cingular's to Roger's, thereby putting a different branding on your phone, and removing the java restrictions. I'd say it's the next best thing to unbranded.
