hello everyone, i am in need of some advise. summer is coming near and i need to get off my family's verizon family plan. im going on the road with my band all this year so im going to be travling alot. im going to need a phone/plan that can do alot of data/messeges back and forth since im going to be using it to check email, myspace, text/messege and browsing alot more then calling. the helio seems pretty cool, free texting/messeging/internet pretty decent rates, cool device, has GPS and google maps. my only concern is it not being an actual smartphone. and that realy limiting what i could do with it.... now on the other hand, the cingular and tmobile smartphones seem real cool, hackable...apparently i just found out i can download programs from torrents(yes i download stuff) for my phone, such as GPS locating programs and more. also not being stuck with helios IM client and web browser seems like a good thing. also another thing, the helio isnt a world phone. i plan on being in europe for a few months this year. and not having a phone would suck. what should i do? bottom line is i probably dont want to spend too much a month on my bill, i only need about 500 minutes of daytime minutes, but free everything else....ideally.

opinions?

shop coverage before anything else.....

No matter what phone you get, if there's no coverage where you are, all you have is an expensive brick.

First you say...

then you say....

(the following is just supposition, and not in any way shape or form based on fact)

just suppose you get TMo... great coverage when you're home.... then you go to Europe and the coverage is non-existant..... now you have an expensive brick... and as you said yourself... "not having a phone would suck"

I would go with the Helio Ocean. The Helio will have good coverage all over the place since it rides on pretty much any CDMA tower it can find from what I hear, and Verizon has generally excellent coverage so the Helio would be the best for travel in the US. The phone also doesn't really look like a smartphone, and its compact enough that you could tow it anywhere, neither the Wing nor the 8525 are anywhere near compact. The Ocean also has a great UI, 3G (yes, I know the 8525 is 3G as well, but its 3G coverage will only be in major cities), solid messenging capabilites and the ability to deal with any email account you have. The 3G will be great for browsing. The Ocean also offers the most advanced/built in features for google maps.

For the issue of Europe, unless you are filthy rich I would not be concerned about having a world phone. If you were going over for a few weeks it would be a different story, but roaming for a few months in Europe with cost you hundreds of dollars, maybe even thousands depending on your usage. Just buy a cheap, unlocked GSM phone for Europe and get prepaid service over there, much cheaper and much easier.
