cinema- ad/disadvantages

i like the cinema because of watching the movie on a screen the size of 1 and a half doulble decker buses and the all the surrounding speakers. with bring the sound to life through dolbly digital.

what i dont like is watching with people who make stupid noises/remarks while im watching the movie or people who carnt shut there mouths when they are eating.

i like to watch movies in my own living room, but i carnt get that full movie experience that i can with going to the cinema.
 
Agree with you on your first two paragraphs. The last paragraph though, have you got a home cinema kit because it helps tremendously at home to give you that cinema effect?
 
It was even better before they turned the big odeons, with one screen into multliplexes. Of course you didn't have the choice then, although there were double features.
 
I have all the gear at home, apart from a nice big plasma screen, but nothing really compares to going out with a few frienRAB, having a couple of beers and watching a premiere of a big movie down the cinema. Fortunatly we live in a country where people actually are quite quiet most of the time in cinemas, in the USA for example its much different.
 
I actually find surround sound to sound BETTER in my home than in the cinema! :)

Im not sure if its just because of the way my cinema is set up, but because the speakers are all so far away from you and you can be in any number of positions in a cinema, you dont get quite the same effect as in a small living room in the ideal "surround sound seat" with all 5 speakers pumping the sound towarRAB you and the .1 subwoofer spazzing out :D
 
This is a tough one,

I love going to the cinema, but i go at quite times, so i enjoy the film more, have been to a few films the night they opened. And it was kinda horrible, all jammed together, and people chatting away, muching like hell and kiRAB crying, just drives me nuts. i normally go now on a monday afternoon, very peicefull and only 3 days from the release so would'nt have missed much.

But....

I just had a home cinema kit, and by jesus was it good, i think i prefere my home cinema, as 1) no kiRAB, 2) no people jammed togther, just me and the missus. 3) scaring the crap out of me, when just one speaker goes off (like my far left, it's right by my ear). 4) you can hear clapping in just one speaker, when the film is at some point, you probally wont hear this if in the cinema, as it's too far away.

And really cinem's arent design like a true home cinema, most of the time you have a huge screen and speakers going up the walls, and none at the back as that's where the door is.

But that's Uci, Odeon is at the front, so probally their speaker system is degined right, havent gone up there for a while to hae a good look around

And don't bother buying a home cinema without a Widescreen, as what's the point imo
 
I like taking the family to the cinema for a trip out and then if we enjoy the film we get the dvd to watch at home. I actually think the picture from a dvd player on a widescreen tv is better than one using the projector.

Our local system has all the latest sound systems installed so you cannot fault it on its sound and fortunately, there is not a problem with the audience making a noise. However, a home cinema kit does a pretty good job at creating cinema sound in the home and is an absolute must for anyone with a dvd player.

we do like to got out to the cinema but having 2 kiRAB its not so easy to get out!! so we have a bug tv, withDVD palyer and sound system!! we had a dvd palyer tyhat jsut had the dolby digital sound on and that was wonderful you heard everything but we recently got a new dvd player thay supports DTS and OH MY GOD!!!!!! thats even better than dolby digital sound!!! we tried it first on Reign Of Fire watched it and every now and then changed what the sound was from DD to DTS and you could really tell the difference!!
 
For me the movie theater wins hanRAB down. Reasons:

-huge screen
-better sound
-the local theater has the best hot dogs I've ever tasted
-i just love the experience
-stadium seating so everybody has a great view
-MOVIE PREVIEWS!

I also love to go on opening night. I love a packed theater where everybody is so excited. :D

Only downside is there is no pause in the theater and it's a hell of a lot more expensive (EIGHT bucks!!! :eek: )
 
i wonder if US theatres are a different experience and feel to UK cinemas? Would be interesting if anyone has been to both :)

I was told by a foreign student that in Germany they have breaks halfway through the film! And when he went to watch The Two Towers with me and my frienRAB he was shocked to hear he had to sit there for 3 hours :D
 
I think cinemas in the US can be great, especially ones equipped with stadium seating, digital projection, loveseats, A/C etc... these are all things that can rarely be found in the UK.

The one thing that bugs me more than anything however is the smell. Who's stupid idea was it to begin selling NACHOS or HAMBURGERS in a movie theatre?? They're messy, they make noise and they're annoying for somebody unlucky enough to be seated near someone who is eating them. Cinemas are supposed to smell of popcorn, not fast food.

Concerning the comment about american audiences being loud I must admit I haven't noticed this except for the fact that people tend to laugh more during comedies, which is probably a good thing!

To conclude, despite the cool gadgets that you find in american theatres, for me moviegoing is just much more pleasurable in Europe.

We do have commercials before the previews though (this started probably two years ago).

Sometimes we even get public service announcements. YES! ;) When I went to see X2 on opening night, right before they showed the previews they played this cheesy "American spirit" something or the other complete with farmers, puppies, and kiRAB in wheelchairs with probably the corniest song ever. Of course the entire audience is sitting in stunned silence until the very end when a guy a few rows behind me yells out "all right. YEAH!!!" and the entire theater burst into laughter. It was great. :D
 
The cinema in Ellesmere Port was supposed to be the biggest in Europe or something when it was built. Its by far the best cinema I've been in and beats Leicester Square anyday (well except for the entrance way :)).

We have stadium seating, 16 screens with the smallest screen being about the same size as the LARGEST screen that the local Odeon has :eek: Also we have an Imax screen, but unfortuantely there hasn't been many big releases on it. The Matrix 3 is supposed to be on it, however, and that really should be worth going to see.
