"Chu-Bra!" Talkback

Why is it that the new series of the season with the most posts in its talkback is the one that the most people hate? So yeah, I watched the first 2 episodes. I guess it could have been worse, but it was still a show about 12-year-old girls' underwear...

I think I've found my problem with this show. It's the exact same problem that NC was having with the Junior review. It's kinda boring. I thought a show about an underwear club would be a laugh a minute or insanely stupid ecchi. But it's neither. It's just boring. They're playing forming an underwear club incredibly straight...which is boring. It should be at least a little funny, but it's not....it's boring.

Episode 3:
"A Windy Day"

Another okay-ish episode, but the series is really getting mysterious, and that actually makes me anticipate the next episode. At least it's trying okay on building up plot (or, dare I say, plots)

Thing is, the show is trying to be this: (yes, the image is from Arrested Development, being a huge fan of that show, whatnot)

...Which doesn't bother me, but I feel like it's trying too darn hard.

People won't take an underwear club seriously, which builts up Narm. I can't tell if it's trying too hard, or trying to hard, that it's making it laughable.

I actually don't mind the drama, but some other people will look at it the other way, but I won't blame them.

Gotcha this time...

Episode 4:
"Our Respective Forms"

Haven't seen the episode...and for some reason, this reminRAB me of Zoolander...

^^Aren't we on episode 4?

What the hell was going on with the first part of this episode before the OP song? That was way too much drama. It don't belong in my ecchi

This show is trying my patience for the amount of ecchi I can stand honestly. And I watched Elfen Lied.

EDIT: Okay, the first line out of Kiyono's mouth has translated to me as "You know what garfield15? You should finish this."

A lot of irls did attempt to join, they were just scared away by the fight, Principal! Right, guys?

(Nayu, Haruka, Yako and Komachi stay silent)

Come on guys, say something!

(they stay silent, I proceed to yell at the computer screen a lot)

Wow, that felt...pretty cool. It's weird that the scene after that goes back to a bit of humor. Shouldn't it be the oposite?

Also, there should be more male tsunderes in anime like this. I don't know why, but it's working for me. Female tsunderes are being a bit overused and are getting too loved.

One more thing about the end: wow, that was...a sudden "virgin" joke.

Don't worry, I fixed it as soon as you mentioned it.

Drama? It actually looked pretty freaky. It felt ike something out of Bakemonogatari.

I'm surprised that the first thing you could think of the cold opening is drama, and not Nightmare Fuel.

Episode 5:
"Between Adults and Children"

Komachi: If you can't make a club, make an appreciation society! Be a man and see it through!
Nayu: I'd never be able to do it on my own... [beat] ...and I'm not a man, either.

Again, another great development episode. I wonder how an appreciation socity will do.

And while the series have been changing some people's minRAB in this and the previous episode, the next episode...well...could be a problem. Let's just say that they are gonna be the "Youth Gone Wild". Yes, I totally referenced that '80's metal song.

Looks like it's just me and Meso again. Not like I blame anyone, I'm actually just watching this for completion sake and because it's crap, but not complete crap, just really boring.

While I enjoyed the family aspects of Nayu's life, this episode was kinda boring...until Kiyono showed up and made it interesting. Next week's a Kiyono episode.

(Showing a little too much skin there at the string part? It's like they held the camera shot there as long as possible.)

So...you don't care about great character development? Sorry to sound like a broken record, but it's true.

As mentioned before, I'm seriously worried about next week's episode. I have a very worried feeling Kiyono could ruin the series as soon as she does something naughty.

The ONLY thing that could make the episode worth it is if there's gonna be some great jokes. Then again, as soon as Kiyono spoke, she, like Nayu said, said some "outrageous things". She's pretty much right.

Episode 6:
"Wild Adolescence"

Yeat another great episode. It was mostly naughty in the first half, but decided to play it a little better in the second half. Hopefully, the episode not having as much drama should be pleasable for most people.

The humor's improved, thankfully. This is what happens when GANSIS is involved, of course. The music felt a bit repetitive at times, I noticed. The show also continues to tease romance (and yes, they're all straight) into this.

Also, Nayu looking a bit angry was pretty cool, sadly, there's no image of her and Kiyono looking each other like they want to have a fist fight.

However, there is one really pointless scene involving Keigo (Nayu's stepbrother, of course). He does the laundry, prepares coffee, and that's it. I think that was a normal version of a Big Lipped Alligator Moment. Anywys, next week episode focuses on Komachi. It also pulls a Haruka Nogizaka (seriously though, the Christmas episode airing near Halloween still baffles me) by taking place on summer, even though we're barely ending winter.

^^Seriously what the hell was with that scene? It was literally out of freaking nowhere. I'm like "why was that even approved in post-production? That means somebody actually said in the script 'Keigo does chores...sorry, we needed an extra 20 seconRAB'"

-See, I knew Kiyono wouldn't ruin the show and she's still my favorite character.

-Somewhere in the middle of the episode with Kiyono groping on the teacher and Komachi trying not to be there, I try to understand that I'm technically supporting this stuff with my anime merabership. I swear when Spring 10 "Next for Crunchyroll, B Gata H Kei. You know! The one about a girl who wants to be a slut but then decides to be a stalker instead!"

(That's really the plot)

-Remeraber men. Math can distract you from anything

I wonder, 20 seconRAB of chores replacing 20 seconRAB of cut footage elsewhere? Why did CR postpone this for a few hours?

But then, if you're going to add in 20 seconRAB of random, make it 20 second of random turtle, duck and dog.

your Probably talking about me LOL! But I to would like a link to this site...I wish to become a contributor!

Because Ecchi Must be bashed! lol!

Episode 7:
"Wavering Man's Heart"

Again, not as dramatic like last week, and yes, yet another development episode. These writers are really stabilizing things up, huh?

I might also bet they're planning one more episode for Haruka, as she says that she's jealous at one point. I know it's not the next episode, though.

Not a lot to say about this episode except...the facial expressions were all over the place in this one, and this one's my personal favourite:

She can do a pretty mean eyebrow.

Oh, and there's a beach episode next week, or whatever.

Sad that I'm the only one who's actually having fun of the series because for the plot.

Episode 8:
"An Underwear Overnighter"

...I actually haven't seen the episode yet (the episode title already wins, though), BUT; this episode has already started a small phenomenon on Crunchyroll's forums and it is...
Banana Hammock.

-I was...very confused by the beginning of this episode.

-I didn't care for this one too much. Beach/Hot Springs episodes are extremely hit or miss for me since I know they'll be nothing but fanservice so there better be something funny happening. I think Komachi's drowning would have worked better if we didn't actually see what was happening on the other side and left it up to interpretation.

-However, I did get a good laugh realizing that the girls must have carried him back to his room naked and they all looked away when he woke up. That was amusing. (Why is Komachi still there? All he gets is abuse)

Saw it, and it's yet another fun one, but what's with Kiyono having some sort of...thing in the neck? Does she have the Himanizawa syndrome or something? (obviously, that's a joke)

It had a unusual amount of funny jokes in this one, but in dialogue specific, this scene wins:

(before the girls go to bath)
Kiyono: I'll go later.
Yako: You just don't want to go with the big-brested duo.
Kiyono: Don't be ridiculous.
(scene transition)
Yako: Looks like you lost.
Kiyono: Oh, stuff it!

I was more confused at the fact that well, she seems to want to get laid that fast.

Hey, Mizuno, you ever heard of a kiss? It's breaking the law to not kiss before you "get busy".

After Haruka Nogizaka Season 2 (apperantly, drawing = sounRAB like sexual intercourse), I'll take this any day.

Also, what made me laugh at that scene were the random goofy sound effects playing.

A side of me says Keigo rescued him in time.

However, that's just my imagination.

As I see it.
A young girl tenRAB to act out sexually and more mature to get attention she isn't getting elsewhere or as a desparate attempt to "grow up". She had a bug bite but when it's believed it could be a hickey she let's them believe that, just as she lets everyone believe she really is a promiscuous girl when she really isn't. Most likely that was an emotionally distant relative dropping her off but she'll let others believe it was an older boyfriend.

I don't know how I would like this show to handle that sort of thing.
IMO This show is at it's worst when it takes itself too seriously but between this show and a recent attempt to watch Kodomo no Jikan I find it disturbing to play this sort of thing for laughs.

Mostly though I was fine with this episode, fun mainly because of Komachi's presence. It's all rather standard nose bleeding erabarrassment but without it the show would have been pretty dull.

The banana hammock gag was maybe a little much, Komachi being erabarrassed by being seen in his thong is funny but it doesn't really make sense that he would actually go to the beach in it instead of just wearing some shorts and saying he didn't have a swimsuit. It would have made more sense if he had been discovered trying it on in his room.

Anime News Network's review:

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/review/chu-bra/episodes-1

"...make it hard to see this as anything other than an excuse to leer at underdressed schoolgirls."

Wow, thanks for making people who are seeing sorely for the purpose of entertainment bad. It's sad when people think this is purely for fan-service. I am really serious here.

These guys also criticized UFO Ultramaiden Valkyrie for (almost, in my opinion) no reason, as well as the same people who said Popotan was good, even though the series had so much fan-service, as well, by the fact that we "have to be patient" to enjoy it.

Heck, GAINAX's shows always seem to get away with this, with no criticism at all.

Episode 9:
"My Seventh Grade Summer Vacation"

Oh, they're totally setting the conclusion of the series. 2 reasons why:
- Who's Haruka crushing on? Some are saying Komachi, and some are even saying that it could be Nayu.
- Keigo got a job, and it looks like it's going to be be somewhere far away.
However, from the look of the next episode, it seems more of a more comical approach...possible filler?
As for this episode? It was sorta average. Kiyono, for some reason, is more giddyer starting in the second half. I'll also give the series credit for teasing as many straight couples(should Haruka's crush be a boy) as possible, which is kind of rare for an anime like this.
