I have had a cough for the past 5 weeks. I have been to the doctor 4 different times. The first time I was told it was a upper respitory infection adn was given antibioics. The second time it was bronchitis and I was given Tussin. The third they said allergies and gave me Stahist. On my fourth visit I was again told allergies( I had a chest xray at this visit and was told my lungs are clear). I have no ideal what kind of allergy it is but the cough will not go away and now when I cough, it is followed by a need for rapid swallowing and it is hard to catch my breath. When I yawn it feels like my throat is closing and that something is stuck in the back of my throat.
Any ideals on what it can be? I am so sick of coughing and my ribs are sore from it. Any help would be appreciated

Have you been tested for asthma or acid reflux? Both have a persistent cough as a symptom. Also, there is a cold going around that has a cough associated with it that lasts for several weeks. I'm just getting over it and this is the 3rd week...am still coughing some. Was so bad at one point that I had laryngitis for 3 days.

No I haven't been tested for those. My dr seems to think allergies. I forgot to mention that he gave me a steriod shot and said it would open me up but I could never tell a difference.

Is it a dry cough? If so, the most common causes of chronic cough are:

-allergies
-asthma
-post nasal drip
-acid reflux

A lump in the throat feeling could be acid reflux. You might want to research LPR. This is when the acid comes up into the throat area. You can have that without any heartburn.

If you are coughing harshly and constantly, you might want to look into Pertussis. It is on the increase across the country and the cough typically lasts about 3 months.

Yes it is dry. I have never coughed anything up with it. Thanks for the advice, I will look it up.
