What a waste of a holiday...he did nothing...America had settlers years before the Man was even alive.

While it is true, millions of Native Americans lived in the "New World", and others, including Vikings had reached America from Europe previously. But Americans and Europeans tend to be Eurocentric, and Europe was where the power was and it took old Chris to find the Americas and take the news back to Spain and to the leaders of Europe. The colonization of the Americas, bad for the Natives, started with Columbus, not the Vikings or some group that has legends of finding America before Columbus.

I don't know if the Vikings told anybody in Europe or not. I think their discovery was not known for a long time, maybe until the 20th century when artifacts were found in Newfoundland. Before that it was legend.

If that is true then why not disparage Neil Armstrong and NASA? Let's disparage Henry Hudson and Vasco de Gama as well to only mention a few or we can go back to the stone age and hoard cowrie shells.

Yes, in fact can easily be attributed the discovery of America to the Norman ones or to the Indians of America that already lived in those areas before it arrived to us Cristoforo Colombo. According to this last, the continent on which he had just landed they were her Indies, but then realized to have one open of it new. We attribute to him the discovery of America in which he has been the man of whom we have tests, while of the Norman ones or of the Indians we don't have anything. I hope to have helped you.

I agree, Columbus never set foot on North America. He did land in Central America, but that wasn't until his third voyage in 1498.
However, John Cabot (Giovanni Caboto) had already found North America when he landed on Newfoundland in 1497.
I think we should be having a John Cabot Day holiday instead.

Columbus had mission from Vatican , we know Kieth Erickson was 400 years or more before Columbus on this continent .
Columbus was known mostly by church , so we don't have choice now .

that takes some balls to cross the ocean like that, unsure of what's on the other side. How come the Native Americans didn't discover Europe instead?
