Christians, why do you think the bible says that 'suffering produces patience'?

Notice I said 'Christians'. Others please try to stay out of areas that don't concern you.
Stay with your own. For Christians, isn't suffering then a bad thing? I have thoughts
& views and love to hear yours. Thanks.
