When ever I talk to theists, and the conversation leads to religion, I always get asked the question, "So what, do you think life on earth was based on chance? Do you think everything was placed perfectly in order for life to exist, just randomly? No god helped, it was just perfectly there for us?"
Now, I have two arguments against this. Yes, I am admitting right now, I don't know exactly why there is life on earth. No one knows. But here are two things I want to point out.
There are BILLIONS of stars in our galaxy. Billions of them. And there are billions of billions of galaxies out there. I actually researched it and calculated it, and with the estimated number of galaxies out there and the average amount of stars, that means there are about 250,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 stars in the universe. And 10 years ago, that number was MUCH less. How big will it be in the future?
Now that that is in perspective, it is also estimated that there are about 3 planets per star. So that means there are about 750,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 planets out there. Now, if we say there is one in a billion chance of there being life on a planet, then that still leaves millions even billions of other planets out there with life on it. Or even one in a trillion planets have life on it, that still leaves millions of planets with life on it, somewhere.
_____
Now for my second point. Lets completely discard that last one, as if its logic is pointless.
What makes you think, that our world is set up perfectly for us? It could be that we adapted to this world, and we live off of what we have. We adapted to live off of breathing oxygen, because thats what is here. We adapted to live off of water, because that is what we have here.
There could be aliens life looking down on us right now thinking, "How could they live on that planet? It's full of toxic oxygen and dangerous chemicals like water." Or stuff like that. Maybe they live off of other stuff, and live in completely different temperatures. Our planet to (Theoretical) other life-forms out there could be super hot, or super cold for them. They might wonder how we don't freeze or how we survive it.
Don't look at it as the world having to be perfect for us, we have to be able to adapt to what we have, and what is given. And that is how we are here.
_________
This is just some points I want to bring out. Why do (some of) you theists out there make that outrageous and stupid argument? I just don't get it. If you could please explain to me that would be great.
*Note, I am not trying to deny your existence of God, just merely a argument I do not understand.
