Christians: when debating with non-believers...?

... why use Bible quotes as proof when the non-believers DON'T believe?

(Note: this is a serious question, not merely a disguised put-down. This is something to which I really want to hear comprehensible answers.)

(Also note: seriously, honestly... it ought to be self-evident that quoting the Bible to answer this question is an automatic downvote, for crying out loud.)

a) Bible has already been written, I've already read it - I'm not as closed-minded as you.
b) You've completely missed AND DEMONSTRATED the entire fundamental point of the question, demonstrating a massive attack of cluelessness on your part.

See? You didn't quote Scripture yet I downvoted you for a completely different reason.

@ Meghan W.: historicity/authenticity: not really, no. The whole point of disbelief in the Bible is that it's not a valid document. Superman comics are 70 years old, shall I base a belief that and back it up by quoting Action Comics #1? I upvoted you for the rest of your point, though.

I don't. I have more sense (and better debating skills) than to argue from a text that the opposition doesn't accept as a credible source.
 
WHO EVER SAID THAT CHRISTIANS HAVE TO DEBATE NON-BELIEVERS. AS A MATTER OF FACT MY BELIEFS TELL ME NOT TO US MY FAITH AS A CONTENTIOUS THING. BECAUSE DEBATING IS A SUBSTITUTE WORD FOR WHAT IS ACTUALLY GOING ON. WHAT IS GOING ON IS ACTUALLY ARGUING. YOU ALL KNOW IT. SO BE HONEST WITH YOURSELF FOR ONCE. YOU WANT TO ARGUE.
 
Every one of us was a non believer before becoming christians. Many of us was touched by God through His Word.

Each verse is like a seed, some times the seed fall into hearts than are like solid rock and no plant can grow there. But the Word of God is also like water; water that gradually erodes the rock and opens a way where soil can fill an plants can grow later.

It is true that the verses may get down thumbs, and probably the answer would not be selected as the best one. But the verses may be seed or water in a soul that reads them. Over the time the Asker may be touched, or maybe other YA! users who were curious and read the question and the answers given.

The Word of God never returns empty handed, it allways accomplish its purpose (maybe not the purpose of the Answerer, but the purposes of God). Amen.
 
yeah i just recently turned to god but not the one in the bible the one that talks to me and answers my questions i guess it is something you just need to open your heart to and just try to accept and you will see but some dont and i have nothing against them and neither does god he understands
 
Your automatic down vote on a scripture shows how closed minded you are. If you judge something before it is even written.
 
Because most of the arguments that they have been exposed to has always rested on the authority of the bible--the real question here is why is it that they couldn't care less that you could care less about what the bible says....

It's an attitude thing more than anything else...

Sorry, I'm a Christian but that was too funny. When I answer religious questions I only reference the Bible when it is extremely relevant, or someone specifically ask for them.
 
Hmmmm....that's a good point. I don't tend to debate them much. Not ALL Christians think we have the least chance in converting non-believers simply by citing scripture or insulting them.

If you really want the answer, it is found also in Scripture. Isaiah 55:10-11 says, "As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it."

Although the unbeliever rarely accepts the Scriptures as authoritative, God says that His word doesn't return to Him without first achieving His purposes. That, for the believer, is enough.
 
It's because they don't think outside of their religious box and therefor can not form an intelligent argument without dragging in the knowledge that they are comfortable with.
 
When a Christian does the impossible or the outrageous or lives out the extreme philosophy of Jesus Christ, these are the things that causes unbelievers to take notice and offense. No amount of talk about God's Law could make much of a difference. The best thing that catches their attention is when a Christian acts extraordinarily in the Spirit of the Law.

What is the best way to witness to an a non-believer...Live your Christianity, don't debate it.
 
I say its great trying to convert people to ur own religion but if they seem resistant and unwilling I say leave them be before you offend them. Why bother?

It goes without saying that anyone who believes in invisible sky critters is not real bright hence, their continuous use of a book of ancient myths and superstition to 'prove' their case or substantiate their 'claims'.
It's nothing short of madness.
