Last night I watched some of it & was shocked. I'm curious about Christian reactions.
Here's where I'm coming from: I was born & raised a fundie, and saw a lot of weird stuff--some of it very damaging (I've since converted to another religion). But I thought this film was pretty shocking.
I'm interested in responses from Christians only. How do you feel about this film? Did you agree? Do you think some of the tactics used are abusive?
A couple of things about the films techniques bothered me. For instance, I'm conservative, and thought it was a cheap shot to try to link conservative politics with this kind of Christianity. Also--the film makes homeschoolers look like idiots. I know from personal experience that some homeschoolers ARE idiots!--but I homeschooled my kids for non-religious reasons, & we had a great experience with good results--
Anyway, I want your opinions on the Christians in the film, and feel free to comment on the tactics used by the filmmaker, too.
I really want answers from CHRISTIANS ONLY. I know how the rest of you feel.
Suzy: Really? You saw the children falling on the ground and shaking?--and weeping with guilt over talking back to their parents? Besides, your profile says you're Baptist, and these folks are definitely Pentecostal...
Happy Pilgrim: The woman IS articulate. I wish you'd see the movie. I wonder what your opinion would be then. Articulate does NOT equal right...or even sane.
Suzy: What I saw wasn't faith, though. It was fear- and guilt-induced emotion, and it looks like incipient mental illness to me.
Look: I LIKE strong faith, even in Christians. These kids aren't going to grow up going to church, though--they're going to end up in a shrink's office.
Scabs: I'm not Christian. I'm Jewish. I want answers from Christians because 1) I wonder how prevalent this is in the Christian community (not very, I hope) and 2) I KNOW how non-Christians feel about this.
Pastor: Gay rights or pro-choice parades may sometimes include a few kids. They are not specifically TARGETED at kids. They don't spend hours and days inflicting guilt and shame on children.
Nikki's: Being a 'survivor' of less extreme tactics than that, I can assure you that those kids aren't happy. You don't experience that kind of manipulation and guilt and come out of it unscathed.
Does Christianity really want Muslim-style adherents? Because that's not, IMO, what a healthy & happy relationship with G-d is like.
Suzy: All the martyrs in Hebrew 11 were JEWISH. I won't even go off on how dare Paul try to co-opt them--
If you're worried about your children being martyrs, what do you want them to do? Fight back? Are you advocating some kind of armed response? Because short of that, anyone with strong faith could be a martyr. Not that I see Jesus camp as promoting strong faith...rather, guilt & fear. And fear doesn't mix with faith.
