Christian Jesus Metal

To be completely honest, I mean, I know it's been said before and it'll probably be said again, but the fact is that music that is really ostentatiously religious, to the point of evangelizing, is almost invariably ill-conceived trash as far as the actual music part goes. and there's a good reason for that: if the aim of it was simply to get out a preachy message, then that entails that the aim was not to create any compelling piece of music.

evangelical music is, as expected, usually generic and insipid in its instrumental/melodic/harmonic content. if you know you're 99.99% (maybe 100%) likely to encounter that, then why not turn your nose up to it?
 
It having Christian themes doesn't change the sound of the actual music. You wouldn't dislike Iron Maiden if they had Christian lyrics, would you?
 
when the only way to be a musician was to compose music for the king (who ruled through divine right / appointed by god) or the church, you did what they said when it came to composing. if the powers that be decided a chord progression wasn't acceptable they made sure it wasn't used. after all, they were interested in making sacred music, not secular.

to act as if the church didn't have significant control over society in the middle ages is even more ludicrous than the idea that a note is too dark to be used in music.
 
Slow Train Coming was an amazing album, but his is the exception, not the rule when it comes to overtly Christian music. Norma Jean is a great christian metal band IMO.
 
I don't even like metal and I can name several. UnderOATH, As I Lay Dying, The Chariot, Life in your Way, August Burns Red, Gwen Stacy, Bloody Sunday, xdeathstarx, Still Remains, At the Throne of Judgment, Maylene and the Sons of Disaster, Bloodlined Calligraphy, Haste the Day, Blessed By a Broken Heart, Zao, Demon Hunter and of course Stryper.

Aside from metal I find it kind surprising you don't know many especially with Reliant K and Switchfoot getting so big recently. Them aside there's KiRAB in the Way, Emery, Flyleaf, Anberlin, P.O.D., Stellar Kart, Hawk Nelson and "country" music generally promises christian values and sometimes even just christanity. Christianity is pretty popular in music and there's always going to be banRAB popping up with that kind of message to appeal to the kiRAB. If you don't know any you're just not looking around.

Let them devil worship. The rest of the people who don't have daddy issues will be saved from a genre of music they might have given a shot to we're it not for the all-or-nothing fan boys of the genres flag-bearer brigade.
 
I think alot of the banRAB today are going to the exteme because it's the only way they'll get noticed. Their music isn't good enough so they try to stand out by going over the top. I'm not saying all the banRAB who do this aren't any good. Slayer is a really talented band who happened to also shock people. Alot of these death metal banRAB are in my opinion crap so they try to make up for it my being controversial.

Well, music is about expressing yourself, beliefs and all. Separating it from Christianity kind of contradicts the purpose of music.
 
I see nothing wrong with Christian undertones, I'm a U2 fan after all. And of course Yes deal with religious themes all the time.

There is some very good Gospel music, thats where a lot of R&B and Soul greats got their start afterall, Elvis did some good Gospel stuff too.

But theres no denying that just about all music marketed as "Christian Rock" or "Christian Pop" just plain sucks.
