They probably deliberately pick people with tragic stories. I know that's
how it works on So You Think You Can Dance and also American Idol. I know
some people who have tried out for both shows and I know some that made it
onto SYTYCD. Those people didn't necessarily have tragic stories but they
did say that's what they were looking for.

Oh, good heavens they are *not*. So she choked up when she mentioned
her recently deceased brother. So what. Most of us get choked up
when mentioning a recently dead pet, so she had a right to be that way
about her brother.

They're donating prize money to a favorite charity, so it's not
surprising they'd have a close relative or friend with some sort of an
affliction that makes them interested in whatever charity it is. Anne
Burrell was donating to a diabetes foundation because her nephew has
type 1. Does that mean she's wearing *her* heart on her sleeve too?

However........ those shows are all edited. They shoot at least 10 times
as much film as they use and when they edit the show they go through
them looking for sound bits. They would have more than enough footage
that there is absolutely no reason for them to include those moments
where the contestants get teary eyed. That leads me to the conclusion
that the producers want the extra drama.

extent.
