Choosing your first bike?

I know this question has been asked before but hell I want to ask it again! I'm getting my first bike (that I will own, I know a little about riding) and Im looking for something that will be attractive and have a little giddyup! Im am a novice at riding but I know for damn sure I dont want a little 250. Companies and motor size is what I am comparing. Any help will be appreciated. Oh and if you can list pros and cons for your answer that would be cool too.

Well bigger is better to you yanks but don't be so quick to dismiss a 250. Might be more bike than you think it is. Have a look at bikez.com they have some comparative ratings that you can browse to suit your taste/wallet. They list past models as well not just the newest offerings

motocross is a really good way to get used to motor bike a good bike would be a suzuki bandit 600 nice power and throttle responce and good for wheelies

There is really no substitute for starting SMALL and working your way up. By small, I mean 100cc or less if you are an adult.

That said, if you are determined to jump right in and take your chances, I like the older Susuki SV650. (The newest ones are butt ugly.) You can buy them very reasonable and they can take you anywhere you want to ride on the street. They are great performers and EASY to ride well. Plenty of torque from the 90 degree twin engine so you won't be stalling it all over the place. It has a very acceptable "cool" factor compared to other noob-friendly street bikes too.

Good luck.

See if you can find a 500-750 as your first bike. It's strong enough for occasional freeway rides, and low maintenance cost. You ARE doing your own maintenance, aren't you? If not, you stay away from bikes!
