Choosing a Slider...

Hi,

I am a 16 year old planning to buy myself a cell phone. The phone will be on a pay as you go plan with Rogers. I've been wanting a slider, seeing as that flips, and bars are a little payed out.

I will be using the phone for texting, phoning (duh), camera (although I'm not worried about quality too much), and video (not a neccesity, but would be nice), and I was hoping to get MP3 player built-in. Durability is a huge issue since I'll have this phone for atleast 3-4 years.

I was trying to choose between 3 phones, the Samsung D807, Sony W850i (carried by rogers yet?), and the soon to come out Motorola Rizr (carried by rogers yet?).

Does anybody know about the latter two in terms of when Rogers will have them?

I'm open to any recommendations of flips, but I'm not really interested in the candy bar design.

Also, I find the orange OS of the sony a little unattractive, is it okay to work with though? I've always like the Motorola OS and I've never tried the Samsungs...

Sidetrack: You can't expect to get any of those if you are set on going prepaid, you can only BUY the phone at full price and you'll have to add $50 (activation + simcard)... not very cost efficient.

In terms of WHEN rogers will be getting them phones, (besides the 807) don't set your hopes to high, they won't be in for the holidays... Rogers lauching the K1 within the week, but that'll be it... no more lauches until 07. They've got too many feature phones.. Your best bet is to get the 807 if you want a slider for christmas, otherwise it won't be a bad choice to cash in the present and wait a little longer for the phoens to come out....

Are you looking for features or looks?

807 has both (giant screen, ext mem, mp3, bluetooth)
sony is more for features and generally more expensive because of it
the moto i purely for looks as i see, it is nothing more than a v3i/v3t that slides.

Interface:

Sony's interface is relatively complex and in layers, but they have good hot keys on the unit to jump into the apps.
Motorola, always the same, they're lazy and uses the same concept repeatively, like their phones.. (v3,v3i,v3t,....how many more v3's??? v3 Maxxxxxx)....
Samsung take time to figure out the interface, but only annoying thing is the ok button launches the browser...

my 2 cents

Uh, okay scratch x-mas...

Also, my mom has a pre paid phone and wants to go on a plan. Is it possible for her to buy a phone at a 3 year term price, and then switch the plan to her old phone, and give me the new as a pay as you go? I realize its easier for me to take the old phone but I rather have a new one lol

P.S Thanks for the speedy reply

Changing your plan from paygo to contract wouldn't really lower the hardware's price to match the 3yr plan they have... this is because roger's has a tie on you alreadly, they know you won't run away. whereas a new customer has 'more' first time incentives since they want to lure you into their market... My suggestion would be to ask your mom setup a new 3yr and you get the phone you want and take over her prepaid act. You'll just have to stick with her number....

There are actually more ways to get by....

Consider this....

1. Buy a new paygo set for as low as 79.99 and use your name and you pick a whole new number.... (whole kit for as low as (after rebates) 79.99 will save you on activation $25, simcard $25, and $20 airtime prepaid... you just have to pay for the taxes) Tell your mom to setup a new plan with 3yrs and get you the phone you want. hence there's no need to change anything on the old paygo. ( if you be good to her, insist/talk her into to upgrade a phone for you every two years tell her you'll listen until you have your own plan)

---and there will always be that back up phone sitting in the box just in case a relative comes over for a vacation and you'll just topup the old number and Volia!!! temperorary cell phone for uncle john or cousin Frank... earns you that extra thoughtfulness, now your mom has no reason not to do that HUP for you.-------

all in all my opinion...

I really like this idea. That's what I'll do. Thanks for the help, but any suggestions on my original question about the phones themselves?

Depending on the retail delear you go to, some might really be nice. I know for our dealers if you start a activation and sign for 3 yrs our hardware price is cheaper than that of rogers site. (on top if you tell them you want a paygo ativation on top, they'll chip in the sim card and you'll just have to pay for the $25 programming fee. no hassle)

It saves you a bit, REminder all NEW paygo acts have $20 airtime.

K790 ftw! but u dont like bars.. samsung isnt all that user friendly, even though it has most of the features, but the stupid phone dont permits u 2 do them in the most convienient way (not sure if any1 get wat i mean..).. and i haf a grudge against motorolla >< the LG chocolate looks pretty good i suppose.. nope sorry rogers dont have good sliders.. i would go to some place that sell other cellphones (more exp tho).. if u do, n80 is a really good choice

Thanks for the help. I’m not really liking the Nokia, I have a feeling it’ll be hard to find, and the internet isn’t an option for me. I've narrowed it down to either the Rizr or 850i, mostly because I'm told that the D807 doesn't function well as a MP3 player.

Can anyone confirm this? More suggestions are welcome
