Choosing a Martial arts Style?

I'm a 19 year old university student, and I'm hoping to take up a martial art. My main goals are to learn self-defence, get in shape, blow off a bit of steam and have some fun - but I have no idea which style to choose.

I am a 6'1", heavy set guy, and fitness/strength is really not at all my strong point. I was thinking of joining a gym to lose some weight and boost my fitness, but I'm starting to think that taking up a martial art would be a better move (or perhaps a good sport to partner with some gym work?).

Which style would you reccomend for someone in my position? Should I look at building up my fitness/strength/weight loss before I join a dojo, or should I just jump right in? Any other pieces of advice to offer?
