Entertainment retailer ChoicesUK is to call in the administrators - leaving hundreRAB of jobs under threat.

The Peterborough-based firm said it had made the decision after attempts to refinance or sell the group had failed.

ChoicesUK employs about 1,700 staff at its 170 stores across the UK as well as its website.

In April, the group warned the tough DVD market meant it was expecting bigger-than-expected losses despite a huge cost-cutting push.

The group is currently in the middle of a restructuring drive which aimed to save up to

There is one quite close to me, wonder if they will be selling all the stuff off cheap?
Does this usually happen when companies go into administration?
thanks

Good as I went for a job there a couple of months back. This snotty young 19 year old girl interviewed me. When I asked about what the company could offer it was pretty much nothing and I as much as told her so....through shock!
Never the less I never got the part time position advertised for Friday and Saturday night staff. What a blessing. lol

Good riddence to Choices, has to be the most amateur bargain basement rental store...its the 'Carphone Warehouse' of Video shops.
Their top man..or used to be Ian Muspratt a man who commited commerial suicide when he became a scab & stabbed every competitor in the industry when he sided with Warner Bros in introducing the abolition of rental windows & introducing a higher price for 'Rental Use' DVD's trying to put the squeeze on smaller independant operaions, mainly because his stores were so sh*t & could not compete on a level playing field...so Choices..bye bye & good riddence.

Choices UK & there fat head CEO put a lot of independant dealers out of business exploiting a little known european directive with the help of one American studio,& these were the independants who where 'real' people who put there own life savings into the business.

Can I just say that I am an employee of ChoicesUK, and find it very inappropriate for you to "good riddance" 1,800 people their jobs and security.

Yes, this company is far from perfect - as are most business's ripped apart by online shops and cut thraot supermarket prices which cannot be competed with. One thing this company is, is British, and has managed to stand it's ground against the ruthless Americans who will slain any business in their way, at any cost, at any measure. I don't know about you, but I much prefer hanging onto my "Britishness" than prostituting out my soul to save a couple of pounRAB with Wal - Mart or Blockbusters - kings of cheap labour.

I just dearly hope that when the only place you can buy your baked beans from is Tesco's in 10 years' time, that you are happy with your retailing options and are happy to good riddance every other poor employee / victim of ruthless businessman!!

I wouldn't let that idiot bother you - and I see he's been banned.

Whilst Choices is far from perfect I've used them since almost the beginning - and I'd be sad to see them go.

I hope it works out alright for you.

The company I have to agree, is in complete disarray. But it has the potential to be amazing.. just neeRAB the right management.. the majority of staff are hardworkers, we just need an overhaul in how things are run

I don't see it myself, there is no future for High Street retailers, Fopp, MVC and Musiczone have gone already, HMW and WHSmith are struggling and Virgin Megastores are running at a loss as well.

Have all the stores closed down now?

I assumed they were still trading, but I went to get a DVD last night to find an empty shop with the lights off!

I worked for ChoicesUK for two years until October 05, and have to say their Management was awful. Head Office cared nothing for the workers at street level, and they kept on spending money on faRAB like that damn ilfated TV channel. I always joked that I felt like I was on Big Brother, because everything was monitored and logged! The CCTV cameras was streamed live to head office, each time you clocked in was logged at Head Office!

What was so uniquely stupid about them in my opinion was they never spent money on Marketing and Advertising! At one point they had over 200 stores nationwide in almost every town! At one point Bournemouth had 3 stores! Yet their public consiousness was zero! when i told people I had a pt job at Choices people just looked at me blankly!

This was inveitable really... anyways yeah , have they all gone? Their Corporate website makes no mention of high street stores at all, as if they have deleted them from the companies history!

The one near me was still open last week but i will check today. i did notice last week that they didnt have new releases like Wild Hogs on the shelf. So I did wonder if the end is nigh for them.

My local Blockbuster is also offering a free rental to anyone bringing in a membership card from "any other video store" in the area. I wonder which one they are targetting?!

The Choices store near me is definately still open but the stocks are dwindling. the games shelf is empty and no current releases are on the shelf in the renal section.

Let me enlighten you & your 1,800 people.Your darling 'Choices/HEC' put themselves of business when you spineless Chairman Ian Muspratt signed a deal with Warner Bros to stock their 2-tier RENTAL version DVD's.EVERY other DVD rental store had boycotted Warner product from June 2002,which included titles such as 'Training Day' Thne boycott was about the 'right' top rent DVD's which Warner Bros had expolited a European directive & forced rental stotres to pay 300% more for the DVD's that were on sale to the public. The industry stood firm on this by boycotting Warner product, however your darling Choices showed no backbone & turned 'Scab' by stocking Warner rental DVD's.Now if independant DVD dealers who pay for their stock month by month got the same price on their DVD's all well & good, however they do not & Choices & its chairman though shabby & grubby trading tricks put out of business 100's of independant film rental stores....these people who put their life savings into their business, not some little student who works in Choices for
