Choices DVD rental shut in your area?

Sorry if this is in the wrong section....

Where I live, we always used to have 2 DVD rental shops. One was taken over by Choices, then both. No problem. They then closed one. And then a month or 2 ago, closed the other.

This leaves us in the poo, to be honest. I really don't want to join an online rental place as we don't watch enough films to justify the monthly spend. The nearest rental place is quite some way away and certainly not a "pop out and get a DVD for the evening" distance

Does anyone know if Choices are scaling back their high street presence and if so, why? I can only assume this may be down to online rental, and people getting films via Cable (very good choice now with VM) and Sky Box Office.

The same has happened in my area too. There is one left open but they dont get many of the new releases in anymore and are selling things very cheaply. METHINKS THE END IS NIGH FOR CHOICES.

My Blockbuster has just closed and I want to leave Lovefilm as I am watching DVRAB less regulary. Are there anny online pay as you go services?

Know just how you feel,we had a rental place 2 minutes walk away then blockbuster opened neaby and put the smaller shop out of business.

Shortly after that they moved to a nearby mall thereby making rental a much more expensive proposition.

Glad I have cable otherwise I wouldnt see many movies.

I think dvd rental from a store is pretty much a dead duck with so many tv cable and satellite options available, dont see the stores surviving much longer.

Even the mail order business must be struggling.

The rentals market also received a welcome boost from the wet weather in June, when demand was up for the first time in a year.

Rental stores across the country have been closing down fast as they struggle to compete with pay-TV services, cheaper DVRAB in shops, online entertainment and web-based postal rental schemes.

The BVA said 9.3m films were rented in June with The Departed, Click and Casino Royale the top renting titles so far in 2007.

In my area (Suffolk) the libraries now seem to get all the new DVD releases and you can rent them for two nights - a bit more expensive than video rental places, but not much in it.
Another possibility is to belong to an online rental place but on a limited rental package - some of them do two or four rentals a month for a lower price. The drawback here is that you don't tend to get new releases and won't necessarily get the movie you want.

The Choices near me shut down on the 4th May and now there is nothing by me. Not that I ever used it, but it is always a shame to see shops disappearing off the high street

I think my local Choices will be going the same way soon - I recently had some coupons through that let you rent one DVD for free, one for 99p etc., this isn't usual for Choices as new releases can be around

Choices near me has also shut down.

I believe those Choices staying open are to phase out DVRAB, and only deal in HD/Bluray and game rentals.

Bet the DVD pirates can't believe their luck!
