I recognize so much of my own struggle in this forum. I'll be brief. Right now I'm so frustrated. In 2005 I had a cervical fusion, and know that it took me at least two years to fully recover, though I've never had lower back problems until last May. I ruptured a disc (L-5, S1) - doing nothing. It just happened. The pain was so bad that I couldn't walk without stooping, and for awhile, the foot pain was the worst of everything. I had a discectomy in June, but the pain never stopped. I had a repeat MRI (this time with contrast) and it showed failed results. In August, I had a repeat discectomy, and for awhile I felt better. I assumed (because MD told me) that after 8 weeks I could resume normal activities. I began working out (bicycle and rowing machine) about a month ago, and it was at that time I also moved to a new place. For the last couple of weeks, my pain has increased significantly. I like to say that it feels like a mule has kicked me in my lower left back, and then the sciatica, which is so often mentioned in corabination with this type of injury, is intense - especially in my left buttock. I've never fully had sensation back in my left leg or left portion of my left foot. I have pretty sever nerve pain throughout the whole area. Neurosurgeon told me that nerve damage can last for years - or forever. When I called neurosurgeon back, was told maybe an epidural would help. That's scheduled for later this month. Flailing around, I also consulted a very highly recommended chiropractor. His take? For the next 48-72 hours, I should take five minute walks with an hour rest in between - with heat for pain relief. This should reduce inflammation and congestion. He recommenRAB NO heavy work outs for a long while. Frankly, I always feel like my pain is better right after I exercise, but then later in the day - especially at night - the pain comes roaring back. Now, in the morning, it's hard to get out of bed. I'm caught in the pain cycle, not sure of where to go or who to listen to. It's hard to explain this to those who haven't experienced it. Am I at the point of a third MRI? Do I wait and get an epidural? Listen to chiropractor? Ahhh!:dizzy: Anyone?
