China is raising gas prices. Can't we do the same here in the U.S?

Is it fair that other nations always have to step in and conserve more than us when gas goes up? If China is raising prices to stifle demand, why can't we sell gas here in the U.S for $5.00/gallon or more so that demand will drop too. I think gas is still reasonable at $4.00/gallon and people still waste it.
Why do Saudis have to increase output? Its their oil and gas, they can make however much they want. Why should they stoop to worlds demands when one day, if they run out of gas and have nothing left, nobody is gonna care about them.
