What effects did physical barriers have on China's cultural development?

I know it has something to do with how the mountains, deserts, and oceans cut off their communication from other countries. Therefore, they became more isolated and ethnocentric, and felt more deeply about their culture. Something like that, but I'm not entirely sure. Help please!
 
well those things you mentioned were a barrier for both east and west...but the silk road still allowed for influences on chinese culture - perhaps most notably buddhism
