Children in restaurants. What would you do?

Last week my partner and I went to a lovely restaurant by the sea, It was a spontaneous act and we don't go that often. There were two other couples there and it was a lovely intimate atmosphere. Suddenly a group walked in of about 10 people and it became a bit noisier, but that was not the thing. A mother had her child there and was playing with it with a rattle for the next half hour. It really changed the atmosphere and suddenly I felt we were in a childcare centre. We didn't say anything and left soon after, but it was an expensive restaurant and we felt cheated. Should we have asked her not to shake the rattle? It was most inconsiderate and she was oblivious to the environment.
They were on the other side of the room as well. Loud rattle
