thanks for advise everyone :).he been refereed to see foot specialist so hopefully find out whats wrong for sure and what can be done.its a month waiting list tho:mad:

Both my sons walked on their toes at a very young age - as well as I. We have an inherited syndrome where the achilles tendons are too short. They are now adults and otherwise very healthy. I would suggest seeing an Orthopedic Dr at an early age. There may be some stretching exercises you can do that could help this. My boys (adults) and I to this day walk on our toes. I had surgery, which did not help and my son was casted to stretch his tendon. All of these procedures are very painful at a later age. On a bright note, they are successful healthy adults....and with accomodations such as higher heals on shoes are functioning just fine. good luck to you keep us posted !:)

no i know he is not.he otherwise healthy happy full of confidence and does great at school.still getting him checked out tho

my 5 year old son only walks on his tip toes.he cant wear any shoes properly as they hurt his heel so he walks on his toes even in his trainers.otherwise he is healthy, happy child.does anyone knows what is it and what can be done?

Glad you are taking him to the doc. The issue with baby walkers can happen as they start to walk but we're talking about a 5 year old. His heel pain and inability to walk on his feet flat are signs of a problem with his muscles and tendons in his legs. The sooner it is addressed or fixed, the better.

good luck, mom...................Jenny

he been diagnosed idiopathic tip-toe walker his best option is percutaneous tendo-achilles lengthening surgery then casts for 6 weeks.not sure i wanna put him through this tho....

My niece does as a result of spending too much time in a baby walker. But I would say that if his heels are hurting get it checked. Has he always done it? Or is it a new thing? I would say if its a new thing, has there been a change in the family / routene / in his world which might have unsettled him and might make him attention seek? Making him act out, children can do the oddest things to get attention. If he's always done it, it might need treating and the earlier you check and get help the better. At what age did he walk? They can do alsorts to help walking issues, but it depends whats happening. Do his muscles around the ankle seem tight?

From what youve said I think most likely cause is either a bad habbit from the walker (my sons physiotherapist hates them) or some muscle being tight. (my son has tight muscles) It could be a muscle as far up as the hips as they all have to work together to get us walking well.

The good news is there is stuff they can do. And doing it now means its not set for life and it can be overcome. Good luck, and let us know how you get on :)

maisee,

Do you think walking on his toes is bothering your child? What type of doctor did you consult for the diagnosis?

I have to say that I see quite a few children that walk on their toes for the first couple of years. It is quite a surgical procedure for a cure. What types of test were performed for the doctor to come up with the diagnosis? Did this doctor mentioned any other options besides having surgery--maybe some form of physical therapy to help stretch the tendons if that is the issue.

Maybe you should seek out a second or third opinion from a pediatric orthopedic surgeon. I do not know if getting second and third opinions is allowed with the UK health system, but if it is maybe it would be worth the time to check out other opinions.

I hope you get a good solution to the problem

My daughter has this same problem and the health visitor tried to blame the baby walker, but when she was seen by a specialist she was diagnosed with cerebral palsy only minor and it only affects the lower calf muscle (its too tight) and as a result of this she walks on her toes she was diagnosed when she was 18mnths and is now 4 she is a happy lively healthy child and this is being corrected by her wearing splints.....From my experience if you don't argue about your concerns they don't take you serious.

yeah it really could be a baby walker he has spend a lot of time in it as a baby and his little brother hardly ever been in it and he is fine.He started walking at 11 months and done it ever since we tho he will grow out of it but its getting worse when i tell him to walk properly he manages few steps and then he back on his toes .he is going to see doctor monday

I did this as a child. I finally stopped when I was about 5 or maybe a little older. There was nothing wrong with me, I just wanted to walk like that for some reason. The only lasting effect of it for me is that I have bunions on my feet. I'm not even sure if that is what its from but it makes sense since I was always up on my toes and thats how you get bunions. But I have always had really strong legs :)

I know two children that had the surgery. It is ok. They turned out very well. One had autism. The other one had mental illness. the one could walk without a walker aftwards.

My daughter walked on her tip toes for months and the dr. said it was fine and that many children do this .. it is okay. Many children will outgrow it. It's only bad if kids don't stop when they get older. Hold off on any surgery for your child unless absolutely necessary. Best of luck :)
