Chicken Pox questions

22 days post exposure and no infection in either myself or my wife who is confirmed to not be immune. Thinking that it must have been something other than chicken pox.

My 15month old has chicken pox which presented very atypically. She got about 8 small spots that never did scab and then started to heal and fade. Then 10 days later she breaks out in typical full blown chicken pox marks all over. Very weird.

Anyway, both my wife and I are not immune (never had it as a child) and thus will probably be getting it as the incubation period is ~14days.

I read a lot of doom and gloom about adult chicken pox and was wondering what I should be looking out for on the serious side. At what point do I need to go to a hospital?

Also, is Zovirax prescribed for chicken pox in adults and does it even help?

Any experiences would be appreciated as we are trying to get prepared :)

while thats really good news, either your child did have the pox and you two just got lucky here, or your child actually had something totally different THAN actual ch pox, which you really DO need to find out exactly what created her 'spots? this is just really 'needed' info for the child and you to know for her overall health and her records too? this could have also have been some type of actual reaction to 'something' your child came into contact with too? just something you really do NEED to ID for the childs sake.

if you should EVER actually see this type of spotting on your child again in the future, find out about everything and anything that they came into contact with and write it down. you may start to actually see some type of pattern develop over time just by doing this, since right now, you seriously do NOT truely know for absolute certain what those were even from? glad everyone is better or not sick here. As an adult, the virus stays in your body for a long time. IF it becomes active again, you will get shingles-which is very painful and can last for months.

Feelbad,

Good advice. We have mad an appointment with her GP. The pox did present in an atypical timeline (first wave of spots followed by a second wave 9 days later). There was also a lot of swelling around many of the spots.

only because you are just an adult dealing with this and never having chicken pox, i would most definitely see your primary doc for any possible preventitive treatments or things that just can make you have a less impactful 'run" of them. while i know measles is and can be pretty bad if you get it older(hubby got this at age 19, and did fine too, but DID have to wear sunglasses(even in the house 24/7) for some reason since it can create blindness in adults), i am not too overly certain about ch pox, since that virus does stay in your system for life, and as IBAP mentioned, will come out in the form of shingles once you have had it which will show itself from whatever nerve root it decided to take up spce on within your spinal column, within that specific dermatome/area of skin that particular nerve root simply innervates, but only if it gets activated?

but i would find out NOW just what any simple precautions you can take and what treatment options you can try if you even get this. i would not wait til you actually show signs of it in an adult if you have been living with a child who obviously has had this. i am suprised HER ped doc did not actually ask you about YOUR pox status when they saw HER, so YOU could simply be as informed as possible too? you just don't know if they could start you both on something that could lessen the overall impact NOW when it does actually show itself by simply seeking out the advice of your own primary in this situation? good luck to the both of you here. i hope if you do happen to even get this, it has little consequence for you. let us know how things are going, K? that actually sounds alot more like actual hives? if she also had one exposure to something reactive, then another days later, it could explain the 'wavelike' pattern there too? did they itch at all? FB

Hi xrox

My first chicken pox age in my 50's , things you do need to know.

Do NOT take any asprin. Asprin can lead to Reye's syndrome a deadly disease when having the chicken pox.

My doc prescribed priscription Diphenhydram 50mg 4 times daily for me.
This med is very similar to Benadryl for itching, he ordered quanity 120 capsules with refills. Over the counter would have been more expensive for me since i needed such a large quanity.

i never had chicken pox as a child , so had to suffer in my 50's with the chicken pox. I was very very sick having this.

If you do get the chicken pox at an adult age, please let your physician know all other meds and supplements you may be taking at that time.
Medications interact with another, so for your safety let them know.

Hope this gives you some insight.

One of the distinguishing factors of the CP rash is the blisters are in varying stages of healing. Some will be just starting while others are scabbing over.

If you and your wife are concerned about getting chicken pox (which may be more severe in adults than children), you may want to ask your doctor about getting the vaccine for chicken pox.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for the advice. We are at day 16 since exposure and no symptoms yet. Went to my doctor and if my wife or I develop symptoms we will be prescribed acyclovir/Zovirax (anti-viral) medication to ease the course of the illness. We have to get it into our body within 24hrs of onset for it to be effective. Anyone use Zovirax?

Cheers,
Greg

They were very itchy and had fluid blisters which led the walk in clinic to diagnoe chicken pox. Still quite atypical considering the swelling and length between waves IMO. Usually chicken pox has 3 waves within 5-7 days.
