Chevy S-10 extra cab door latch keeps breaking?

I have a 99 Chevy S-10 extra cab. The extra cab door has it's own door handle which has always been hard to open. It has caused the handle to break off on two separate occasions, when pulling it open. I would love to be able to open the third door with ease and don't want to take it into the shop to be repaired again, only to have it break one more time. Is there a reason the door is difficult to open when it does have a door handle or do I need a different type of latch? Your help would be appreciated. Thanks
